I think collecting games is silly...

I know what Fanistu means. You hear about people sitting on large collections of rare games just to keep the value up, when all you wanna do is play them and have fun.
I mean... I'll probably never get to play Panzer Dragoon Saga, simply because of it's high price. I'd love to play it but I can't justify the cost involved. Would it be cheaper if collectors didn't sit on them simply to say that they have a copy? Possibly. Who knows?

Collecting... ummm whats wrong with it ?

I collect games (controllers + consoles). Admitedly there are a few I still need to play through as I haven't had the time, but still just because I keep my games instead of selling them when I am done with them why is that a problem ?

Also you said something along the lines of a gamer should be measured by how many games he can 1 credit not how many games he has.

Well firstly you do get people who collect and enjoy games without gettin to 1 credit level.

Secondly some people enjoy collecting and thus are collectors not gamers.

Finally if someone has the money / time etc to keep their collection of games which they have gotten good at doesnt it mean they can keep in practise and still be one crediting all their games X years down the line making them what you would call a "gamer" ?

Anyways I'm off to sit in my room with my games collection and cry myself to sleep for being such a horrible person :P

      Luke.

        games are nice!

        japanese games are nice!

neo games are nicest of all!

its a good thought that you can whip the old classics out at any time
        and give em a bash.

i would imagine that there are hardly any people who bank on games increasing in value(thats stupid, there are far easier ways to make money)

you'll find anyone that is willing to fork out..........say.........350 quid for slug x on the neo, will most definately have a real love for the game!

so if you have the means why not collect all the games you know and love
for me its as much about nostalgia as anything else.

If peeps want to collect games, then let them. I used to keep every game i brought, also had brought games in the past and never played them, got to about 600 games and realised for me it was a waste of money, now im down to about 60-80 games that i want to keep and play.

I can see your point of view where prices are concerned though. But put that blame on the publishers for releasing such small amounts.

              PWNED!

I collect, and I'm happy. Buy a ****load of games just so I have a good collection, and something to be proud of when I'm in my room.

I'm not collecting them to make the value go up, that's just stupid :S

I buy pretty much everything, play it to death and then keep it - does that make me a collector or a gamer? I can't see the difference myself. In fact, the only thing I've genuinely bought with the purpose of never playing is a mint condition, still in the Nintendo cellophane copy of Zelda: Link To The Past on the SNES. Break the cellophane and it won't be worth half what it is now... if only I'd taken it to the Miyamoto signing day in London instead of my then brand-new GBA SP. Bah.

I've always said that collectors and gamers are not the same.

The collecting culture is one I can't say I understand. I buy games because I want to play them.

I personally see collecting as somewhat cynical. Somebody somewhere wants to play that game, but collectors just horde as they imagine the game will make them lots of money in the future (wtf??).

It becomes even more absurd when you consider that some are happy to pay astronomical prices for crap games simplay because of their alleged collectability.

Sorry if I sound a bit harsh, but this really isn't something I understand. Again, I don't see it has anything to do with gaming in any real sense.

Collectors don't horde games because they imagine they will make them a lot of money in the future.

Thats the excuse used to try to justify it to themselves .

Essentially. as has been stated in this thread numerous times, its no different to collecting anything else - stamps, insects, cars whatever.

To be honest I find it hard to pinpoint exactly why, but its related to having a love of something and liking to have something to represent materialistically.

It's an interesting deabte, because I'm a bit of both. I buy stuff to play, but when I look at my games there are numerous great titles which I've simply never got around to playing. This doesn't mean I won't ever play them. One day I'll get around to it. The simple fact is that most games require and investment of many tens of hours to get the most out of them. Even if I stopped buying games now, I would have enough in my collection to keep me entertained for the rest of my life. So why keep buying? I suppose its the collector in me that keeps me going and forums like this, where I can join in with like minded people discussing all the new titles till the cows come home.

As you do, or intend to play the games, that would make you a gamer who collects rather than a pure collector. There's nothing wrong with that.

Yeah, I really envy people with piles of shrink-wrapped games (some of which are crap) they don't intend to play.

Someone had to get the obligatory pretentious Fight Club quip in there.

There are people you come across you claim they are the be all and know all of a game genre just cos they own loads of old **** on some old machine. Yet they are totally clueless about even the genre they spend all their money on collecting, doesnt stop them chatting THE MOST **** about games they havent the slightest idea about. Every new game that comes out is **** to them - simply because they know nothing beyond what's already been and gone.

It's not like that here but there are entire forums full of them X_X

That would be people that buy Battle Garrega then

Collectors piss me off a bit too, each to their own though I spose..

As for the folk with 100% complete collections, that's some acheivement, although I simply can't admire a complete collection if I know there's whack in there that deserves ridicule.

If I have just one ****ty game in my collection it tarnishes the entire shelf.
