I used to collect games but eventually having a whole set that I never played sitting there got to me... so I cleared it out and usually just hang on to stuff that I like to play.

I don't have a problem with games collecting, since I'm a bit of a collector myself although I am slowly trying to stop - only bought a couple of games in the past two months.
I enjoy it even though I don't play many games nowadays. I enjoy sitting down and looking at the lovely colour pictures in the Japanese manuals, I enjoy just seeing lots and lots of games and knowing they're there. I love having a big list of games I own.
I do often compare it to stamp collecting. In stamp collecting, you own a stamp and it's there. You can't use it for anything, you can just merely appreciate it's existence. However, with games, you can appreciate it's existence, read through the manual and play the game and enjoy how it looks on the shelf.
Oh, and no real collector collects so they make money in the future. Those aren't collectors - they're people trying to make a quick few quid. Collectors don't buy to resell - indeed, selling games is the hardest part.

Not really, as long as they dont go to the store and buy all of the games that I want to get who cares. I have never heard anyone say "Don't you just hate Collecters who buy stamps and dont post them". Some people appreciate a game by playing it to death and some by just getting a copy and drooling over the cover.
If someone made a thread called "Don't you just hate people who post pointless threads..."

I use to collect games. I had a massive DC collection. Loads of PS2 and GC games as well, not to mention retro titles. Then i thought what is the point? I've got shelf after shelf of games, but 95% of them i never play, probably will never play again. I sorted thru them and i couldn't believe how many average and downright poor titles i owned. Sold all of these and only kept the real class games. I'm now down to about 25 games spread over 6 consoles and thats more than enough to keep me entertained. I'm defitnely enjoying my games more than ever as well as i only own the best games (imo of course) and these days i spend my time playing one or two games at a time but really trying to master them.
As for the original question. I certainly don't hate collectors, people can spend their money anyway they want to, its just not my cup of tea.
#EDIT - Underestimated the size of my collection a little bit. Current total is actually 42.Last edited by PH; 03-08-2004, 18:06.

I own a large Collection of Japanese 'Playstation 1 and 2 games' and also Japanese 'GameBoy Advance' and 'Neo Geo' games... I recently purchased 'Silent Hill 4 for ?55... I PLAYED all of the games with the exception of 'Scandel' with due to not being able to read Japanese makes it impossible... A collector would buy Metal Slug X and never play it as in the words of somebody on a certain neo geo forum "I don't play Metal Slug as it would scratch the cartridge and de-value the game" Yes antiques and stamps are to be looked at, games are meant to be played...

I've got nothing aganst collectors, sometimes I think it's pointless, but each to their own. I can see why people do collect stuff though. I started collecting Japanese GC games, and i loved it, just looking at a shelf full of GC games looked awesome. To be fair, I did play everyone. But not as much as I should of. It did broaden my gaming experiances though, like I experianced Ikaruga and some other shooters, Doshin, Luigis Mansion, all games which I wouln't of bothered with before.
But then I realised, i'd much rather have the money and spend it on some new games then having a shelf which looked nice.

yes but the guy who doesnt dare touch his metal slug will no doubt own it mostly because he loves it, rather than wanting to make money on its rarity. wether it be played or not is missing the point.
i have dungeons and dragons on the saturn and to be honest i never use it(keep it in seal), but i always play the rom on my computer.
the thought of having the original game though, which i could play at any time is the best thing.
so in terms of its increase in value, maybe it will maybe it wont!
it matters not to me because i love the game thats why i keep it, thats why i collect.

who says antiques and stamps are to be collected and looked at?
stamps are for posting and my grandmothers antique dining table is for eating your ****ing dinner on really
you bet your bottom dollar she doesnt eat off it, she just has it in her house for nothing but her own satisfaction...............same with games

I think it's quite nice that people collect games myself, keeps a little 'history' of the hobby in safe hands. So when gaming takes over the world, we have some mint and @RARE@ examples of the specific titles that helped it get there.
Personally though, I have limited space. I tend to sell games whenever they start to topple off the end of my shelves. It's getting to that point again now, but the only games I want to get rid of are ones I know will not sell.
