V.Hard Mission 7 on F-Zero GX. 60+hrs was too much with absolutely no progress in play quality. Probably the cheapest thing in a game ever.

Not even worth it for the ****ey Sega craft. hmph.

I loved mission 9, repeatedly playing it over and over, memorising each corner and boost through to perfection.

Battletoads on the snes...which was a fairly enjoyable scrolling beat em up up untill this one level where you had to ride on bikes and jump over obstacles...it was absolutely impossible, as if you jumped one, anotherone would miraculasly appear in front of you.

      Most.annoying.level.ever.

I did that part! I remember it being bloody hard like.

        Battletoads: proper rip.

I've managed to get past Super Monkeyball Expert 7 a small handful of times, but there's a level about ten after that which I have never, ever even come close to besting. Tis a beast

The skelton/dinosaur boss in Ninja Gaiden. I gave it a couple of tries and then gave up on the game entirely... How the hell am I supposed to beat that thing when the godawful camera keeps dropping my character out of view?!

I'd say that Expert Monkeyball Floor 7 is the hardest in the normal set of levels, but I can manage it within the first few attempts now, sometimes even on the first attempt. I think the first time I did it it took me and a friend about an hour of solid continues.

              Floors 21 & 22 are 'fun' too

Not an easy game at the best of times, there's one section, just after you've found the blinding mask and are making your way to the dungeon area to use it to unlock a door, where you find yourself on a balcony overlooking the pit. Cue one ghost. Your movement is restricted to forwards and backwards, running (more like slow jogging, given the character's speed) around and around the ledge. No left/right movement at all, and hemmed in by walls right next to you. The ghost, on the other hand, not only has the ability to float over the pit, but also to float through the ****ing walls.

So you're not just hampered by the fact that you're unfairly restricted in the battle, but also by the way that your enemy can attack you without you even seeing it. Ghost jumps out of wall, attacks, takes off a third of you health, jumps back into wall, jumps back out of wall, attacks, and so on.

And then, when you do finally manage to defeat it (much more through luck than skill), you're immediately jumped by another one in the pit below. Main problem being that, by this time, you've used up all your health potions.

Cue game gathering dust under the bed.
Oh yes, I remember that bit.

I didn't have any trouble beating the boss, but by the time I had, ammo was thin on the ground.

And how was I to know I had to fight a second boss straight after?

I stopped playing the game after running into the same ammo problem (at different points, though) after two restarts.

They call it 'Survival Horror' and judicial item conservation, I call it poor, anachronistic game design. That sort of thing should've gone out in the early 90s with the Click and Point games that forced you to restart if you didn't pick up a key item earlier in the game.

As much as I like Capcom, it has a lot to answer for for making that popular again through its Resi games. ft:

I think I have got stuck on a level on old Battle Houshin on the cube with the big fire phoenix. I just can't seem to avoid the meteor showers, jump the lava streams without landing in them and generally even if I manage to survive for 30 minutes I have only ever knocked the creatures energy down by 3 quarters. Bah! One day I'll go back.

Just out of interest which level is that, Marcus?

i still never beat leo in veiwtiful joe...on kids.
i've read millions of times how to actually do it, but i just cant.

cant remember where i gave up in ninja gaiden, but that was more down to it being boring rather than hard, although i was especially rubbish at it too.

I heard that this was the case beforehand, and as such didn't bother to touch that level on V.Hard.

Then my mate comes round having completed it. I was like and he proceded to complete it on my file too, iirc.

The secret? Don't race them. Kill them. Kill them all. On the start line if possible... it's the only way.

Couple of real swines! The last boss on Metroid Prime, so near many times but never managing to finish it off.

And the WInd dungeon on Zelda-Wind Waker. I'd given up on this game ages ago then come back to it recently and can't get anywhere. The game mechanic with Marklar is so complex I've forgotten what to do . And I can't find him (
