Anyone read the editorial (p176) of GamesCentral this weekend? It actually touches quite a bit on the subject of this thread... go read it and see if you agree...

Surely the argument is simply about what gaming means to people?

Some people like deep skill based games, others like games which deliver a narrative (akin to "playing a movie"). Some people like challenge and developing their skills/amazing higher and higher scores, other people prefer to be able to pull off flashy moves easily and beat a game.

Horses for courses. Gaming can cover whatever people consider to be a fun play experience. People enjoy playing in different ways.

Perhaps people in the West prefer playing in a certain way and people in Asai in a different way. Its probably something that someone studying gaming formally could write an interesting thesis on.

Lamenting the fact that other people prefer playing in a different way to yourself and proclaiming one style "superior" or more meaningful is a bit silly really. I wish I could find more people who play VF4. but I hardly have a chip on my shoulder about the games lack of appreciation in the West.

I mean, its all about playing and having fun.

Heh heh heh. I know Replicant has bowed out of the thread, and I'm such a man, I can't resist blowing a rasberry behind his back.

Effectively, I don't have an issue with Hardcore Gamers?. It's Elitest attitudes that tick me. Sweeping comments about a country, made simply for the sake of making them, when in all actuality, it doesn't make the blindest bit of difference.

        Smacks of insecurity.

        Needing that feeling of superiority.

And by my "Wish you all dead" comment, you obviously didn't get it. How ignorant.

edit: I've been away for a bit too. Snapped my leg off (kind of) in a game of football. Never crossdress and play football. While wearing too much mascara. In the rain. Your eyesight suffers.

        Trust. Me. On. This.

You were doing okay until the "how ignorant" comment . Let that be the end of any talk about elitism please, or any further come back from anyone.

Buit the issue here isn't about preference (neither has it been since the thread started), it's about whether this is a nation that understands games or not.

By and large, I 'prefer' eastern games, but I don't agree with the offensive (and utterly patronising) generalisations or the wholesale, blind otakoid worship of anything Japanese that has epitomised many posts in this thread.

Personally, like Nagoshi said in EDGE to sum up one of his articles GTA: Vice City looks rubbish they shud sort out the graphics and the way it handles, Nagoshi played it and thought it was quite poor. I traded in GTA: Vice City when i found people cud shoot through walls n i cud not target on the correct people, simple things that simply seemed to have been overlooked. I'm not sayin all Western games are ****e or that GTA is ****e n that all Eastern games are perfect, i just think that some of the Japanese games seem like more care has been taken with certain aspects.

Sum times games that take alot of time and skill r hard to get into e.g VF4EVO, even if i become a god on it, who will i play my brother? Unless i find an arcade where they actually have an EVO machine(which is doutful) my skillz cannot be shown or tested.

I try to balance my time equally with games n other things, but obviously games cannot be played all the time as college work etc needs to be done. (Sorry if i veered off the subject)

Maybe Western games take no skill, and it also annoys me that Fifa sells bucket loadz over PES2(which is a far superior game + takes more skill than Fifa). But i spose as stated in other posts on this thread it is probably a culture aspect to what sort of games Eastern and Western people like. 8)
