i dont know about anybody else but if i have to use a xbox pad for a beat um up then i go for the original, as it follows the tradional six button layout more closely. also the original xbox pad is fine if ytou have long fingers or bug hands as i can get my hands all the way around the original pad fine, even as far as right hand to the d pad from the other side. so i prefer it to the s type.

I'm not sure I see your point!

Talking official pads, which is all the majority of gamers use, then PS2 owners are stuck with no method of analogue input other than those incredibly wooly thumbsticks.

I know the buttons have *some* analogue travel, but it's a token effort.

Well, my point was that PS2 (or Gamecube, Dreamcast, Saturn...) owners need not be compromised into using the standard controller for specialist games the way Xbox owners are without them having to resort to the skullduggery of using adaptors etc.
As far as official stuff is concerned, it seems M$ want you using their pad and nothing else... Why they never made an Xbox version of the Sidewinder FF wheel, for example, is beyond me given the glut of driving games available.

Anyway, I don't think any of this gen's standard controllers are particularly good, and personally would never use one for a fighting game or something, but I feel the DS2 is the best all-rounder. The analogue travel on the buttons is definitely exaggerated (256 levels of pressure my ass!), but it is quite noticable on games that take advantage of it like MGS3.

Wowie, well that is a lot interesting replies and thank you all peeps for the most part to those who answered unbiasedly. A few things more, for GTA:VC on Xbox the drive-by function being put on the analogue stick(is it?) feels just wrong, maybe I played PS2 for too long... Also it was mentioned on the redesigned s-pad the black & white buttons just are'nt accessable for games like Street Fighter Collection. Yes the analogue sticks do feel sturdier on the Xbox, more like the N64 stick.

P.S can we please forget the jaguar joypad now, or I fear I may not sleep well tonight.

Well, agreed, but then it's not like either of the pads are particularly useful for that sort of thing, is it? As far as SF goes, choosing between the two is like choosing between a really smelly turd and a slightly less smelly turd.

I use black and white on the S pad for SF... I think they are better than the triggers and I get on with them fine.

Swap the analogue and Dpad around on the Dual Shock and it would improve drastically. It's just a shame that the lazy sods will reveal the Dual Shock 3 and you know it'll be the same layout again
