For me, I just never clicked with it as such; one of those games I never understood what the fuss was about.

Preferred the Cave stylings of Guwange, Esp Ra De and Espgaluda myself.

Fair enough - I always thought Ikaruga was a forums darling though, along with Psyvariar & Rez. All of sudden people are posting saying its ****, which seems fairly questionable judgement.

Still, never mind - back on topic & PSP r0xors, DS is teh kiddee!!! Hang on a minute, I mean PS2 r0xors, Gaycube is teh kiddee.

What were we talking about again?

To answer the thread author's question, I'd say its only worth owning both if they're truly distinct. That is, if the lineups remain significantly different and the PSP's features do things with its games that couldn't be done on a home system.

As for the anti-PS2 thing, well a person is entitled to like or dislike whichever machine they choose, but I do think that any self respecting gamer who deliberately avoids Sony consoles (and I do know and have known people like this) is really cutting of their own nose to spite their own face because there are some fine games amongst the chaff.

Petty prejudices are just a sad aspect of human nature it seems. :/

I was never that endeared to Ikaruga. Sure it's fun, and it's one of the best of the genre, but you have to REALLY love the genre to get anything more than an afternoons play out of it.

It all boils down to what games you like, but with the xbox being cheaper (requires no memory card unlike ps2) and xbox live which is fantastic i would consider taking a second look at the xbox. At the end of the day if you have the money you can`t go wrong with either really at ?100 as they both have a great range of games.
Well I have owned a couple of Xbox's in my time and regretfully sold a 120gb crystal one a short while ago, I probably would buy another were it not for the fact that Microsoft are releasing a new xbox this year.
On reflection, I think the ps2 might have quite a lot to offer to someone like myself, and I could probably find plenty of stuff which I would really enjoy playing, and I quite like the slimline model which is currently being sold.
The question still remains is it worth owning both the psp and ps2, and with my current thinking I am still not sure, and I am wondering if it might not be better to just sell the psp when it arrives, problem is I have just ordered some more games to go with it, so I could end up losing out at the end of the day if I decided to sell.

The PSP is a superb portable machine. After seeing the screen on my Japanese one compared to the DS the PSP screen looks amazing.

I don't know what games you have ordered but I have Ridge Racers which is basically an update on the classic Ridge Racers games. It looks good on the PSP screen. I have Mina No Golf which is the old style button push type golf game and again looks good. Finally for a little distraction (I am not that good at it yet) I have Lumines which is a puzzle game with similarities to Tetric. All the games are Japanese but in the main are easy to navigate. Battery life does not seem as bad as was first thought.

I have yet to try the wireless link up which I think could further enhance the gaming.

At the moment there is nothing really to touch the PSP for portable gaming. Within a few months there should be a fair number of good games available for it and no doubt some total rubbish.

AS for the PS2 there are games to suit every taste and of course there are the games that use USB Peripherals such as Eye Toy which is fun with a number of people and can be good exercise into the bargain. Then there are the two Singstar games which are also good in company. My first current generation purchase was a PS2 which was on the strenght of Gran Turismo 3 a few years ago. I have not regretted the purchase. Of the three current platforms, the PS2 seems to be the one I use the most.

Depends how often you play portable games I guess...if you play them a lot, then the idea of having both PS2 & PSP isn't as ludicrous an idea as some are making out.

I get quite a lot of free time in my job, so I always take a handheld to work with me. It was a GBASP untill the PSP arrived on the scene last week.

Well I have ordered Wipout Pure, Lumines and Metal Gear Acid, I could just buy a new pstwo but my overdraft will be taking a hit especially with the games I will be looking to get to accompany the purchase,
where is the best place to get a pstwo at the moment, offering the best deals reguarding value for money?

GAME online have a PS2 slimline (GT4 package) plus Killzone (a reasonable FPS) for ?124.99 or ?129.99 with FIFA Street instead of Killzone.

Gameplay do a PS2 with a second official controller and memory card for ?134.99. The standard console for ?99.99. You get the chance to build your own bundle there (games are about ?10 off each).

I think I shall take a trip into town and pick one up, the Game deal with GT4 and Killzone looks a good bargain, but I noticed that Killzone got a very poor mark on this forum, so might have to see if I can negotiate something else instore.

I presume the same offer applies in the stores.

Might be worth checking out Gameplay though online.

I've had a ps2 twice, twice have i tried getting into it twice have i gave the hype a chance and twice i've been let down and twice i've regreted it. What a load of ****e! i do not understand the hype that surrounds the ps2, baad bwoy i wouldn't bother if i was you. The ps2 games just lack the imagination and creativity of good games, the same can be said for the ps2's overall design, don't get me wrong there are a few quality titles here and there but you would need a shovle to dig away all the **** that surrounds them. If the is one thing that is the most depressing being a gamer is going in to a videogame shop and searching though the secondhand ps2 section being in contact with all that uninspired crap called games while trying to source a gem or two is enough to put many off videogames it almost did to me, until i sold my ps2 for a neo geo did i remember how great games are and it wasn't just me. I would advise you to use that money to buy a dc or a xbox or maybe keep it till a few decent psp games come out.

The psp despite all the hype and edge w**king surrounding it, the jury is still out on this one. Handheld gaming is normally left to the small companies who can't afford home console sized teams or budgets, even the bigger companies just give development of handheld versions of their games to these smaller companies. This is the problem with out these companies the amount of support for the psp is going to be lower, also put into account that these huge companies such as square enix, capcom, konami, sega etc are all busy working on inhouse games for the home consoles they so far haven't had the time or the people to really get down to work on brand new psp titles. So despite what the psp fanboys say the first generation of psp titles are going to mainly consist of trimmed down versions of previous ps2 games some might have some added content. I wouldn't get a psp now i would prefer to wait until the first wave of psp titles are gone and it will then depend on whats on the horizon.

where did this 'PSP games are just PS2 games' idea originate from? It's totally wrong btw, and mostly spouted by the misinformed

As a gamer who formally spearheaded a grudge over Sony thanks to their "massmarket shenadigans" with my friends, I now completely regret this move. Thankfully, I was young and can be forgiven for such bull****. My punishment is the enormous backlog of PSOne games I have to get hold of now.

The irony is, I wouldn't call my PS2 my default console... but I do have the most games for it. :/

                                This is rapidly getting irritating.

The PS2 is the dominant console of this generation and has the largest selection of decent games. Sure it doesn't have a monopoly on all the best titles by any means and if you ignore the Xbrick or cube you miss some of the gems of this gen (Ninja Gaiden, Zelda, Halo etc etc) but for the best selection of excellent games you'd be hard pressed to beat it. All genres covered - some without question unparalelled (which other console has more the 3 outstanding JRPGs?).

I'm a Ninty fan through and through and my gaming life would have been missing something had I not played KoTR or Ninja Gaiden Xbox wise but if I was limited to just one machine the PS2 has first rate titles for virtually every genre (okay except FPS but hey thats what the PC is for right?) - it has a vareity that no other machine can match. The PS2 is not my fave console this gen - but its the one I have probably spent the most time with...

                                As for the original question

Can you play a PS2 on the beach, bus or loo.

No? So if you intend doing this then a PSP is worth getting.

If you don't you a handheld much now lets face it super screen or not games are better on a big telly then a little telly.

                                End.of.story
