One problem you might have with taking it back to the shops is the packaging, was it any different for the VIP package?

It has a pretty premanent sticker on the front and a different barcode.

And includes a copy of Super Mario 64 DS, so I'd imagine the box is actually slightly bigger. I got one too, mine's still running perfectly.

I used to have a VIP DS and I heard that a few had problems with them on the Nintendo UK forums, dead pixels and problems with it.

I don't mean to hijack the thread but as its a similar question and sort of on topic I will to save making another thread!

I was wondering are dead pixels common on the DS? Reason being I got my first machine yesterday and it's go to go back as it had 3 dead pixels on the top screen (Bottom one was fine)

I should get my replacement in a couple of hours so I hope its a good one!

Lovely machine though can't wait to play with it more!

why don't you just buy a ds from argos and swap the consoles over then take your old one back for a refund?

DSes having dead pixels is a fairly common deal, but not as bad as with the PSP. PSPs seem to suffer more so from dead pixels than the DSes and I can't quite figure out why. I've personally got one dead one on my lower screen but it's tucked away off in the upper left corner so I don't notice it much so I haven't bothered to replace it though Nintendo of America actually would take it and replace it even for just one broken pixel since I'm still under warranty.

What would be a real good question, I think, would be: Why are dead pixels so common with these new generation machines? I can't say I ever had such common encounters with this kind of defects in ANY of my Game Boys, and that includes the GBASP. Why is it that the DS and PSP are prone to such a thing?

And one last question to ask: What about the "Game Boy 'Evolution'" (as some like to call it)? Will that suffer from the same thing, I have to wonder.

Me and my drunk mates abuse the screen and whack it/drop it on hard surfaces with regularity, still in near perfect condition. You gotta be a spastic or have a faulty unit to properly mess it up one thinks.

It's a problem in every single LCD type of screen.

More pixels in the PSP/DS = more chance of one of them being dead than in a GBA SP.

Why do people always mention Argos when doing these swap out scams? Do they have some really great returns policy or something?

My DS has a single dead pixel and my PSP has none. Can't be arsed sending the DS back to Play Asia though.

The Argos swap was used by most of my mates on the first Playstation to replace dodgy lasers on import machines (and probably pal ones as well).

As stated above buy one from argos, swap the laser and return. I'd guess one day they'll realise whats happening. If you do this pay cash and give a false address. Its fraud but loads did it, so i wouldn't recommend doing it.

Just an update, I got my DS replaced and the replacement is perfect - not a dead pixel to be found anywhere!

Is the touch screen quite hard wearing? I've been playing (and enjoying) Project rub all evening and the touch screen is getting lots of action as a result!

Nice machine, very happy with mine

Woolies are pretty good with this, half the time they don't even check the console is in there.
