I've been playing Jade all week, and it's phenomenal. It's definitely one of the Xbox's killer games, and easily the best RPG you'll see this year. For the combat alone, it's streets ahead of Fable and Knights Of The Old Republic. Add to that the quality of the writing and the storyline, and you've got an instant classic.

is Jade Empire good then? the (admittedly short I was left feeling very pissed at having paid ?6 for it) demo was a bit meh tbh. Made me decide to wait until it's on budget.

If you're into character and story-lead RPGs, and have an interest in kung-fu flicks, then this is for you. The plot and the dialogue are excellent, and the voice-acting is top notch, too. There's considerable depth to the combat system, with the variety in fighting styles. There are almost too many styles, but that gives you (well, me, at least) an incentive to replay the game and specialise in different things. I love the aesthetic look of the game, as well. The graphics and character animations are great, and the level design drips atmosphere, from the mythical chinese architecture to the wisping smoke of the street lamps.
In the twenty hours or so I've played it for this week, not a *single* moment has fallen flat. The whole game is beautifully pitched and balanced. If you liked the writing and story-telling of KOTOR and the combat of Fable, then you should really get a kick out of this, because Jade is better than both of them (and that's saying something - because I'm a Star Wars uber-fanboy, and thought KOTOR was pretty much perfect). Even the mini-games are a considerable improvement over KOTOR. The Dragonfly vertical scrolling shoot-'em up sections are almost worth the entrance fee in themselves. They're far more challenging than the turret blasting bits in KOTOR.
Don't let the demo put you off, because you'll struggle to find a better RPG on any format this year. Just don't expect a PC-style hardcore stat-fest, that's all. RPGs should be about stories and not stats, if you ask me.
