i went through this stage for nearly 6 months up until around a month ago when i was given a new batch of games for my xbox, being doom 3, chaos theory, monkey ball deluxe, timesplitters 3...

after finishing doom 3 i felt a new urge to play more games and have since then finished chaos theory and im now playing forza non-stop!

The last time I had that "whoa" hyrule field moment was Wind Waker, actualy

Spotting new land on the horizon through your telescope, then sailing off to explore it on a whim - that was joyness itself.

The "game" portions of it (dungeons etc) were fairly run-of-the-mill though, so that's unlikely to reinvigorate anyone.

It was all about the Ship sinking mini game with the sailor bloke.

I went through a stage of going off games for a bit i think everyone has a lull . Don't know what it was what reignited my passion but spose it's just playing games i want to play and enjoying them. The Arcades help me alot short sharp burst of entertainment as well as there console counterparts i like to play alot of arcade style games now where i can have a quick blast or any game like that for that matter, at the mo as i don't have oodles of time to plough into games altho i like it when i do have this time to just sit down and play something. As said before retro games have so much to offer

Mate, get yourself a DS. If that doesn't reinvigorate your spark, nothing will.

I think gaming is like every other hobby, you have peakes and troughs. If I watch a movie every night for a week or so, I get bored. If I play games every night for a week or so I get bored.

Never seem to tire of going out and getting leathered, but hey.

Variety is the spice of life. I now buy maybe 2 or games a month and do my best to play them all the way through, finished Resi 4 and just about all of the extras and finished Paper Mario last night.

I think the advice of buy things which actually excite you and dedicate enough time for their quality to shine through.

I went through a major 'collect everything' phase, but now am just down to my DC, Saturn, GC and Xbox (and GBA for travelling with) and am all the happier as I have about 40 or 50 games to choose from instead of 4-500.

In answer to your question, no. If you can not find things which you enjoy playing this gen, then your passion has probably gone, give it time and the right games to play and it will come back.

                Amen.

Ignore the hype that'll surround the next-gen releases & wait to see which machine(s) offers the games you want to play.

Reading machine specs bores the crap out of me - that's why I'm hoping E3 will give us some actual games to look forward to.

if every other games continues to be an army squad based blah blah blah then I will defo give the next gen a miss,

totally agree with the DS sentaments, although I didnt get on well with Mario 64 (broken controls does not a good game make) ZooKeeper is tickling me pink and gets a couple of hours play a day. Give it a go, whats the worst that could happen

Yeah, go with the DS. Cheap as (expensive gold plated) chips, and Meteos, Nintendogs and Zookeeper will peak your interest. You only need to play Meteos for 15 mins to get your daily gaming fix.

do you think the Japanese suffer from the same condition?

Gamecube is the only reason I'm still into gaming (current gen) and DS is launching new possibilities. I don't mind a very competently made run of the mill game, but a less than stellar innovative title seems to keep me more interested, for the first play through at least.

had it not been for cube, and pro evo + katamari damacy, gitaroo man and frequency on PS2. I would probably have completely sold up and stuck to retro and DC.

Speech Smegaman if it weren't for my GC and this forum opening my eyes to shooters I think I would of given up on gaming. I dont think I'll be purchasing a XBOX 360 at all from the looks of all the screens and games it just seems like another dumping ground for even more generic titles.

I dont get why most developers these days have to force feed all this back tracking and lengthy games with the boring side missions just to say 40hrs gameplay on the back of the box.

I wish the gaming media would stop saying giving titles less marks because they're short and sweet. Maybe Strider/MartTM could give the games tm reviewers a kick up the ass and stop brain washing the next generation of gamers into thinking more hours is better.

At this moment in time I think I'm not going to purchase any of the next generation consoles at all. Maybe the next Nintendo console might make me rethink that decision.

Well they do come up with the best games so in many eyes they are gaming gods. Where would be without the Japanese companies along the timeline of gaming, err Fifa 255, Need for Speed Underground 500 and Tony Hawk Pro Wasteland Underground Skater 1000.

I ask because the Japanese seem to cherish games that tend to focus more on the gameplay than the size of the game. Obviously, this isn't always true, Final Fantasy for example. It would be a sweeping generalisation to say that the Japanese make smaller, more fun games (quality over quantity), and the Americans make bigger games with less focus on gameplay (quantity over quality). But I believe there is perhaps a little truth in that.

On another note, the arcade industry and culture appears to be stronger in Japan. As previously discussed, some find the arcade experience exhilirating and reinvigorates their interest in games.
