    Making room for the Next-Gen

With a slew of new boxes coming our way over the next 12 months, what consoles/AV equipment are sitting under the telly on borrowed time?

It's not like these new consoles are small either with the 360 and PS3 being similar sizes to their predecessor's.

I was all ready to get rid of my CRT a couple of months back but with Hi-def being a large part of the next-gen experience i though it would be daft spending over a grand on somthing that will be out-dated within 6 months. Those Hi-def Samsung's are looking mighty tempting.

My trusty Pioneer 717 DVD player will have to go after a good 6 years of loyal service as it's a monster of a player and is very sensitive to what it play's now. Also with HD/Recordable DVD players coming down to a reasonable price level the old VCR may have to be layed to rest.

The main problem now comes with backwards compatibility of the new consoles. With many peeps on this mighty forum owning chipped/imported games/consoles the backwards compatibility doesn't really mean nowt. So the likes of the Xbox, PS2 and GC will probably remain a permanant fixture for at least a few years to come?

My Q has only been turned on a few times since i bought it a year or so back so that may go and my Jap N64 may have to be relegated to the games room. I may even have to let the Neo-Cd Front-loader go and if the worst happens teh 3DO may be banished forever.

What box sized sacrifices will you be making?

i'll just put it all in a bigger room... add a new tv and get a decent surround sound setup.

I'll be needing to make room for the new stuff.

I think I'll hang on to my current consoles and just box them up, out of the way as and when the new ones are released.

Hi-def got me wondering the other day. When I bought my Panny series 6 almost a year ago I wasn't bothered about it and I'm still in two minds at the moment as to how much it'll actually be worth thinking upgrading to a HDTV. Having seen what my screen can do in 720p I'd be quite happy to run games at that and have them looking fantastic.

The games will looks pretty bloody good either way

Certainly. I have my PS2 modded not only to run PS1/2 imports, but also to run PS2 games from HDD without using a boot disc (ToxicOS, using DMS4 Pro). I'm gonna be needing this still.

i'll have to pack my dreamcast up as tbh i have not played it in ages. the xbox will stay(mainly for xbmc and the emus).

as to start with i will only be getting a 360 so don't really need any extra space for 1 console. but a hi def tv would be nice

Just lately I've been sorely tempted to buy an X-Box but I've managed to stave off for now, but it might only be a matter of time. Having just purchased a new TV that will last me ages (its not HD, its just a CRT and it'll last me yeaaaaaaars) limits my space now, since the old TV stand could house everything + dvd's etc too. This one houses Sky, DVD Player, Amp. My PS2 + Cube are on the bass box lol, the x-box would need to float for me to be able to keep my lounge tidy. I know its an old arguement, but the X-Box IS a ****ing HUGE console and weighs too much.

I'll most likely buy a PS3 but not if they are gonna be ?299 at launch and the Revolution is making me drool despite knowing nothing about it, I just have this feeling it's gonna rule. At the moment, I'm desperate for space and I have no money anyway (new baby hehe).

I honestly can't see it being a problem though because I'll never be able to afford the next-gen consoles anyway at launch. They better be backwards compatible though, I'm not retiring Cube + PS2 to the loft this early. Does anyone else think the next gen consoles are coming out too soon now? I'm sure there was a HUGE gap between Megadrive/Snes -> Playstation -> Playstation 2. Is the PS2 5/6 years old?

I don't know how I'll manage, I'm wanting to get a 32" HDTV for my room at the end of the year, and I don't have much space longways under the TV so I'll need some kind of unit that stores alot quite high up too to fit everything in as I don't wanna get rid of my Xbox since it's got all my ROMs and such on it.

I'll probably try and get rid of everything, I like to keep things fresh.

Apart from if the new Xbox isn't as good a media centre as a chipped current Xbox, in which case i'll chip mine now and keep it as a media centre thing.

i've been meaning to put my saturn away for a while now as its not been used much, so theres space for one.

i've also got two ps2s and two xboxs under the TV, so i expect i can get rid of one each, depending on which region of the next gen versions i end up with.

even though the dreamcast doesnt get a lot of time, i refuse to pack it up. there must be something with SEGA on it there.

I've only got a DC at the moment, and plan to keep this whichever next gen format I choose (will be xbox 360 for sure )

Hopefully I will be able to transplant each console with there successors in my Tv bench.

I am considering selling most of the current gen stuff I feel is not worth keeping for cash and to give me space, I think the first to go would be my modded xb and games.

I cant force my self tp pack up my cube, even tho I dont play it that often.

Sad to say but it'll be the Gamecube that goes first to give space for the Xbox 360.

There are some great games on the machine, and I've enjoyed playing many of them, but the console gets so little use compared to the PS2 and Xbox that it will have to go upstairs to my other setup.

But there is one exception to that. If the Xbox 360 turns out to be a decent media player, that'll stream across the network, then that'll be the one to go upstairs.

In either case, I'm really looking forward to the launch of that machine.

I think most will be selling their actual GC dues to the Revolution playing all the GC games. So theres no use for it... Especially when you've got freeloader to solve any import issues.

At least with this next gen arriving soon and everyone selling up to make room, it will hopefully mean more available for those bargain hunters amongst us
