    Dreaming of the "next generation"...

Inspired from some other musings on the Metroid Prime 3 thread in Headlines but what the hell...

What do you really really want to see above all else from the next generation of systems in terms of titles new ideas, content, company direction, pricing and overall structure and format of the industry?

I really just want to use this thread as a sounding board for what people want form this sixth cycle within the world of videogames. Speculation may have now passed on some fronts in terms of hardware clarification from Micrososft and to some extent SONY and Nintendo but there is still a lot to wonder, dream and think about, more so now that concrete details have emerged over the summer regarding the systems.

Where do you see the PC going in the future now that it is already trying to integrate itself into the living room with Media Centre specific stylings and marketing. Can anyone really stop SONY if we are being honest or does it just take one little thing or a collection of incidents to turn the tide against them? Are Nintendo really that screwed or are they still the sleeping giant ready to come down form the Beanstalk do they even care anymore, do you care, do you care that they apparently don't care? X360 Yeah, Nah, wait and see? Do you even care about videogames as much anymore to be interested in playing them never mind thinking or buying a new set of systems? What do you miss about videogames that have fallen by the way side over the years. Are things really as bad as people are going on about in terms of innovation and originality, banality and generic clap trap.? Are we going to have half a dozen super studios in less than five years with auxillary independents and freelancers?

What will be happening one, two or three years down the road?

Lastly just how many times in a magazines lifetime is it justifiable to put a racing car or FPS title on the cover before it jumps the shark?

    Yes, well, so...

Anyway to get the ball rolling I'll just throw this into the hat as a game I really want to see get made due to the old school one more go addiction otherwise known in my house as "holy crap it's 0300 in the morning and I still haven't beaten my score of 166330 with Wesker on the spooky Church level for the seventh atempt in a row" that it has given me in the last three or four months.

Resi IV was a nice diversion while it lasted as well but now I just want a full scale Mercenaries stand alone title with new levels, playable characters from all the other games including all the monsters, a ridiculous amount of new levels, enemies, weapons and team based multiplayer shenanigans. Why Capcom waste their time on "Dead Aim VI: Look it's Operation Wolf in 3D with Zombies Yet Again" or "Outbreak File III: This Time We've Set It In A Supermarket" is beyond me.

A full blown Mercenaries game done right would be well...like... almost as good as having Kirsty Gallacher, Jennifer Connelly, Jessica Alba, Jennifer Garner, Maria Sharapova, Scarlett Johannson and Seth's Mum from the O.C all move in to the flat across the landing together and invite you over for a nice party.

*Crosses fingers for some sort of online Resident Evil FPS for next gen systems based around the Mercs concept*

The beauty of Resi: Mercs is that it plays like a sort of Pseudo FPS, but there is actually more strategy involved in certain areas of the game mechanics due to the fixed behind the shoulder viewpoint and limited nature of the character movement when compared to standard 360 by 360 FPS titles. Add in the bonus points scheme, scoring and new twists to a pretty stale genre and you could actually move boring old FPS's forward a step or two by starting off with something that originally isn't as sophisticated.

Imagine bringing back all the back catalogue of personalties from every STARS members to the villans, zombies, monsters, side characters and so forth, add in a ridiculously large amount of more well designed levels, weapons, online play, split screen, tweak the engine for the next gen to new levels of graphical delight and you are on to something that could merge the appeal of Resi games with the gigantic pulling power of FPS's. I'm not thinking of a mission based FPS but a pure Mercs multiplayer title that can be played individually or with any number of friends. There's never really been a great straight "pure horror" FPS as it's all space age sci fi marines, secret agent, covert ops, real army number pic'n'mix at the moment.

    A Resident Evil Mercs FPS = $$$$$

So Capcom get your finger out and go make this game.

I'll post some other thoughts if this thread develops as that took longer than expected.

Edited: due to copious amounts of spelling and typing errors.

    What do I want?

Simple.... the creation of intelligent single pixels, which can be used in combination to automatically generate organic 2D sprites. Without the hassle of drawing each individual frame.

    As I mentioned on RLLMUK:
    *******
With the power of next gen consoles, can you imagine the sprite manipulation capabilities they would have?

Forget about single frames of pre-drawn animation, they could program it so that individual pixels react and behave in co-ordination with other pixels. Such as the vines from a plant, rather than draw each frame seperately, they could allocate 500 free thinking pixels to each vine, as one pixel moves, so the others all react. You end up with a freely moving, sprite based vine, that in affect thinks for itself, based on a few pre-programmed rules of behaviour. Imagine the possibilities.
    *******

If next-gen systems are so powerful, they should be able to deal with so many free thinking pixels. This idea could be applied to clothing, plants and animals, water, etc.
Other things, such as avatars, wouldn't thinik for themselves but could be prescripted to a degree.

In the same way they build characters and worlds out of polygons that all react to each other, they should attempt to build worlds out of pixels that react. Thereby giving you a luscious, living breathing 2D world, with that unique pixelated atmosphere.

It should also make the workload lighter, since you aren't drawing 1000s of seperate frames.

The more I think about this idea, the more it impresses me.

I'd like to see X360 launch this year for under ?250, and for Perfect Dark Zero to be a quality title! I loved Rare's output on the N64 but since Perfect Dark and Bad Fur Day they've made a balls of things. Fingers crossed November will prove the critics wrong.

I'm hoping that online will really kick in the way Microsoft are hoping it will. I was very apprehensive about Xbox Live, and have only ever played online for a few hours (don't get the time). The new features for 360 Live sound great, and there's a lot of potential to expand the gaming community, or at least bring gamers together as a community.

The Mutant Storm article in EDGE got me thinking about Xbox Live Arcade for 360 as well. Wouldn't it be great if small, independant developers could put together simpler, addictive games and release them over 360 Arcade? Some people on here often bemoan the way gaming has changed, forgotten genres and their passion for 2D classics. Live Arcade could be a way for developers to tap into this, esp with the success of recent retro compilations. A free demo followed by full download at ?5-?10 could be a nice little earner for small developers.

I'd also like to see SEGA back with the kind of titles that they released on Dreamcast. I never had the console but got a lot of enjoyment out of my brothers machine. I love OutRun 2 on Xbox, so I have my fingers crossed for the home console return of House of the Dead, Daytona, SEGA Rally, Crazy Taxi, Virtua Cop etc

This may sound like a fanboy comment but...I would like to see Sony's market share fall. A lot. I very much doubt Microsoft will overtake Sony this generation, but I have my fingers crossed that they'll give them a good run for their money. Why? Greater variety, more competition, better quality releases, games that take advantage of the host machines abilities rather than be polished up versions of PS games....

And finally....Nintendo to sort themselves out and deliver with the Revolution. I was bitterly disappointed by the Gamecube. I personally felt that the majority of their first party releases were lacking when compared to their SNES/N64 forebears. I'm not saying that they were terrible games, for from it. But IMO they weren't as good as the N64 versions (Mario, Zelda, 1080) or were the N64 version polished up a bit (Smash Bros, Mario Golf, Mario Party) or were the N64 version gone wrong (Starfox, Mario Tennis).
I apologise for going on so long.

I was just reading this article and thought this thread would be a good place to post it. Imagine a game that actually lets you feel forces exerted on you. Gives force-feedback a new meaning! There's a video too but I can't watch it as it's realplayer.

Smiling nervously, the young woman walks forward in a straight line. Suddenly, she veers to the right. She stumbles and stops, attempting to regain her balance, and continues to walk forward. And then she veers off to the left.

No, she's not intoxicated. The young lady's vestibular system, which controls her sense of movement and balance, has been thrown off-kilter by two weak electrical currents delivered just behind her ears.

          ...

          Where might this research lead?

The most persuasive commercial applications of Maeda's GVS device will most likely be in gaming; researchers put together a crude virtual racing game to demonstrate how GVS heightened the perception of centrifugal force as users watch the car wind its way around the track on a video screen. Manabu Sakurai, NTT's marketing manager, says the company is currently investigating whether or not gamers would be interested in the device. Flight simulators are another area of interest.

I want to see great strides made in your interaction with worlds. We've already moved quite far from the early psx days of hidden barriers, large clunky bounding boxes, terrible clipping & getting stuck between rocks & hard places. If you look at Mario, Zelda, Prince of Persia or Ninja Gaiden you already have quite a bit of interaction there - climbing trees, running walls, hanging on ledges, swinging on ropes etc and it's clear we've gone far. But then there's always those moments where you double-take: I can't climb on that 3 foot high table because why again? surely I should be able to crawl up that rock, no?. I can't run that wall but I could the other? those bars.. I'm a ninja but cannot scale them? I wasnt running at a specific angle to the wall hence I don't start running on it?

It would be nice to really have truely solid worlds appearing with this next generation. If you think you can do something - it's within the realms of physical possibility - then most likely you actually can do it. So out with the old - areas being scripted with allowed events or properties - and in with the new - a robust all-encompassing game model.

That really is a lot to ask for if you think about it though. Because that completely robust game model still has to be created by hand for every single movement and interaction thats possible for you to do.

Unless some kind of super engine is developed that allows you to do anything is made, I dont see the type of thing your talking about coming out any time soon. Complete freedom is just too much of a dream, how can you program controls for a complete sandbox game?

You make a lot of sense. The idea of taking pixels and sprites to another level is something that has never been attempted yet because of the way the 2D art forms evolution came to an abrupt end in the mid 90's.

We may have a few modern 2D games such as GradiusV- Viewtiful Joe and Alien Hominid- but they aren't in any way pushing the 2D genre in to another stage of evolution!

You have the same dream as me. I would love a CV game as rich and exciting as CV4- but with visuals taken to a level way beyond what has been possible in the past.

The same sentiments can be directed at other franchises. Contra would be good if they made a true 2D sprite based sequel with the same passion as no3 . Just imagine what could be done with shooters given the power of the next-gen. I hope and pray someone makes the most beautiful 2D sprite based shooter ever seen!

What i prolly dream of is that Nintendo regained their status as the biggest game company, and made alot of new games with new ip. And NOT alot of sequels, like metroid prime3, marioparty 19, new starfox, pilotwings rev or whatnot (exception being a sequel to super mario world. not smb128 ).

If you take the snes days, ALOT of new ip's and ideas where introduced, and it was all exciting and fun to be gamer. Now it's fps sequel-sequel-sequel, and more advanced graphics is fine and all that, but that's not what's gonna bring me some new excitment.
Also, playing over the net with others doesn't do it for me, nothing beats sitting with friends and playing together, with or against each other.

That's why i'm most interested in nintendo's proposal for how next gen should be with their revolution. some new gimmick of a controller, maybe some new crazy ideas for games by Miyamoto, release ALOT of new games and not 2 per year. Don't give a crap about HD and shiny mip-map-mop-bump-blimp mapping/textures. Just some FUN NEW GAMES!

Will it happen? most likely not. Nintendo is in this bad circle of trying to satisfy their core gamers with what they think they want(sequels), and also trying to attract some Sony/MS gamers. And I'm having a hard time seeing nintendo win new gamers in this Playstationized gaming world we have today, where people are taught that anything not fps/3d platformer/much violence is bad.
Maybe Nintendo have learned with the GC that even though you supply the market with sequels to old ip, it's not gonna win them any new crowds.

So, what i want from the new generation is for Nintendo to make alot of new concepts of games, maybe realized through the infamous controller, and for them to become big. Oh yeah, and also that console cycles where longer. It's stressful and expensive for developers and gamers having to change consoles so often.

Im a 2D gamer at heart and its just a shame there is gonna be so few of them next gen, but well games companies are there to make money so they make gmaes that appeal to the cattle. Which means more and more and more Metal Gear, FIFA, Halo, Devil May Cry, etc games.

Cause lets face it with the exception of most of the people in this fantastic community who appriciate that some games can try different things, the vast majority of the public are happy with remake after remake after remake which really is upsetting.

Such a shame that as hardware power increases the games to appear are getting worse and worse.

Lets hope that at least some developers dream like some of us and aspire to greater things then Metal gear 900 and Halo 677.

                          Rant over lol.

IMO That is exactly what Nintendo are not trying to do - They have given up on the "playstation generation" and are going after the non-gamer, whilst trying to keep their loyal fanbase on board. DS is aimed completely at th person who wouldn't usually pick up a joypad. I suspect revolution will be in the same vein.
