yeah it seems as if nintendo have changed their tactics recently, but during most of gc's lifespan it's been mostly about making sequels for hardcores, and trying to play catchup with 3rd party dev's and ps2/xbox gamers. one of the few highlights in gc's lifetime have been pikmin and the capcom deal which resulted in among others killer7 and re4 exclusives, which ended up not being that exclusive after all.
so hopefully the new generation will mark a change of direction for nintendo, a "back to the roots" way of thinking, which as you say ds shows.
they might say that this is what they've always been about, but imo it didn't really show this, and the last (n64) generation. mostly-ish.

I just want fun games. Whether they're innovative or derivative, filled with optic-nerve shattering 3d visuals or beautiful well drawn 2D graphics, or even something along the lines of those PDA games in Alien Hominid. If it's fun, I'm all for it.

I just want Devil May Cry 4 with real-time style switching.

That way, I will never play any other game again.

I would also like Halo 3 to focus on the single player (campaign mode) THEN start the multi-player stuff: I disliked Halo 2 for this reason, especially as I do not have Xbox Live.

Nintendo to create a NEW IP, all I got this generation was Pikmin and the revival of the Metroid series, as well as the nice addition of the Donkey Konga games. Do not alienate the third party support (if they will have any) because of their new controller scheme.

Kill Mario for good, unless it is a true platforming game and an one-off kart game, plus change the gameplay style for Zelda - no predictable dungeon's and treasure hunting please.

Last request - I hope all consoles do well equally instead of PlayStation dominating the worldwide sales, Xbox sitting in households in Europe/USA and Nintendo only making an impact in Japan as usual.
