Look at what Capcom have done with Okami... they can do this...
Thats been done with 'the Rumble-Fish', Cel shaded on 3d models set on a 2d plane like SF game, it also included visual damage like AoF2.

I'm somewhat pensive about a SFIV. As nice looking as GG is, it doens't convey the solidity of SFIII and I don't find Rumble Roses image an improvement over SFIII either.

What I found with SFIII, especially the 3rd Strike iteration, is that everything hangs together coherently, through the game systems, animation, sprites, effects, backgrounds and music. No grossly over the top super background animations (thank god they removed that from 2nd Impact).
It's meaty, when a heavy hit lands, it sounds and looks painful. Just look at the animations for Twleve getting hit low and high in a standing position through the strengths, that takes a lot of effort and time to animate.

Even Hugo hilariously clutches his face and crotch after particularly fierce puches/kicks.

I'd be quite happy to see a return of the SFIII style. It's a mature fighter giving a player a system to fight with his own style, it's that flexible. One good Dudley player isn't the same as the next, there's no one way method of playing that guarantees victory. It's so fluid, refined and yet such a simple system. I suppose SFIV would have to continue the mature theme and try and provide and interesting and balanced roster that SFIII:3rd Strike achieved. (No whining about no old characters please! Breaking Ken and Chun Li's legs for a start would make me a happy man :P )

AND If anyone dares diss Q, you'll be hearing from the BIG HEAVY STICK!!

Also, if anyone is in doubt as to the viability of the SFIII: 3rd Strike cast? Take in some Twelve and Necro action, their ability as characters may change in your opinion after seeing some proper play by PinoAB7 and Yamauchi [Think it's spelled like that, Brown Twelve ]*

*Both links may no longer work.

I never said they weren't viable, theyre simply not street fighter by any stretch of the imagination and that goes for that little Gandi-esque turd of a yogi Oro and that Zulu princess turned Eddy Gordo Elena. Giving the choice i don't think anyone would of picked characters like these over your zangiefs or blankas who would look the business when animated to the same level of perfection. As for Q, game on keep him in, he's quirky and has been hanging around the Ken's docks like a flasher since early SF2 versions

Well, how would capcom evolve the genre sufficiently to make it worth while either artistically or cost-wise by bringing the old concepts baggage that is the SFII cast?

There's already SFA3 which hosts that lot and more in a highly competent game, why bother with another title if it's just going to be SFIII but with SFII characters? That in my mind isn't reason enough for another SF, especially SFIV.

I'd rather them take SFIV in new directions and create characters to suit. Which is sort of what they did with the first SFIII, with just Ryu to keep the street fighter title appplicable, but oh no, everyone moaned didn't they? And as for Oro, he's a completely original character in play and style which complemented SFIII's system perfectly. Which is what i'm hoping to see replicated in SFIV, if it happens.

Capcom did sufficiently evolve the game - the parry concept is a change of paramount importance and completely alters the gameplay and the animation is non pareil amongst 2d fighters.

The addition of a couple of characters to the perennials would of sufficed but not an overhaul so comprehensive. If anything the new cast has held back the series. Had they perhaps stuck to a more recognisable roster there would of been more mainstream acceptance and exposure which would in turn drive up sales and then make the likelihood of a series continuation more of a reality. I'm not saying its not a good game, don't get me wrong, at its core its quite simply the best fighter out there however capcom made several mistakes such as an almost completely revamped and new roster not expanded but an actual new roster with basically only chun li and a the shotokans left. What about guile players or fans or vega? I don't see how the older cast can be considered "baggage", i'd enjoy using them in fresh arenas with new gameplay concepts to utilise such as the parry in SF3, groove modes in CvsS, the facility of tag modes a la MvsC and CFJ. Theres a definite limit to how many characters and fighting styles the artists can create whilst sticking closely to the SF universe. Personally i thought the roster by the time of SFA3 was too big and salute Capcom for contracting it down for SF3 but only wished of course that they'd stuck to core bigger than Ryu and Chun Li.

In my opinion SF3 had little impact. And it was capcoms fault what with its various sf2 updates the alpha series darkstalkers versus series. And any other fighting games that were released.if it had been ssf2 then sf3 i think it would have been huge

Had little impact? How do you work that out? - you do realise 3rd Strike is still getting caned in tournaments and the arcades and has a healthy scene on Xbox Live?

Third Strike sits proudly alongside VF Final Tuned, Rumblefish 2 etc and to this day still has a healthy following, and HOW long has the game been about? If anything's a testament to it's quality it's this alone.

I think eastyy is referring to impact on the mainstream. In the casual gamers mind SF3 doesnt even exist, most of mind friends only know of SF2. But amongst those in "the know" the game is one of best and spoken of with reverent pride!

Agreed, not only that, everyone I showed it too including mild game enthusiasts turned their nose up at it. Me included for some time, ive only got DI and im still not convinced after some fair cracks.

I dont think you could ever capture the mainstream with titles like this anymore. You're not just trying to get them to like a genre they feel is visually inferior you're trying to introduce them to a whole different way of playing games. No company will actively promote the 'play' element of gaming to the mainstream here - these games belong in the arcades, until we get an arcade scene back (yeah right) I cant see any reason why they would release another Streetfighter. It's magic to see 3rd Strike getting rinsed in the Japanese arcades just as they were when the game was new - but we'll never see this in the west.

2D beat em ups require untold tuning and location testing for balance, releasing something like Streetfighter straight to console is dodgy in that respect.

It's never going to replace arcades, but I think online fighting games are going to be much bigger in the future. SF3 works great online and if Capcom could push its online competitive aspect, then I think SF4 online would be very popular on Xbox Live, especially among anyone who liked the series in the past.

Could anyone here honestly say they wouldn't want it?

Yep correct I remember the impact SF2 had and it was massive for everyone.SF3 i thought was ace and deserved to be recognised and indeed in many places it is for tournaments. But since the main stream did not take it in (which i assume is where capcom can make the most money). It probably had a negative impact on capcom

Out of curiosity could someone list every streetfighter game that came out before SF3

obviosly everybody here would want it, but your average gamer couldnt care less.
not even if you brought back all those weird characters from street fighter 2 like dahlsim and blanka (who are just as strange, if not more so than most of the 3rd stike cast)

I got to hold my hand up at this point and say that although I've heard of Street Fighter 3 I don't know what console its on or if its even available in the UK yet. Forget SF4.

If its XBrick that would explain alot though...
