Shooters and other neglected genre's for Pal PS2

I have recently been getting in to shooters again and 2D platformers. On the whole I'm bored of realism and want more abstract experiences such as Rez. Puzzle games have also become appealing again after a long absence from my life.

I want to know all the Pal Shooters-2D games and abstract games I should look out for and buy. Suggestions appreciated!

Yeah, Gradius V is your best best, freakin masterpiece. There are a few others I can think of worth checking out:

Psyvariar
R-Type FINAL
Metal Slug 3
Contra Shattered Soldier
Castle of Shikigami 2 (out mid-september, Gameplay have it for a tenner)

I would also recommended you to get your PS2 chipped / imported as Japanese have lot of shoot them ups. ie Cave shooters (3 different one)

Steel Dragon's pretty good as well, two versions for the price of one. What do you all think of XII Stag? Virgin has it for a tenner at the moment.

I did hear of a silpheed game for the ps2 very mixed opinions though.

The only mixed opinion I have of it is whether it's **** or very ****.

Gradius V & Psyvariar are essentials mate - both some of the very best the genre has to offer

Like the others I recommend Psyvariar and Gradius V - both are great games.

Castle Shikigami 2 is ok. You can find a horrible port of the first game in the series if you look for a game called Mobile Light Force 2.

R-Type Final is a good game with some seriously strange and lovely graphics and slow contemplative gameplay.

XII Stag ... nah. Don?t bother I say. Others like though. Can't for the life of me understand why.

If you're also interested in PS1games, I recommend R-Type Delta and Raiden Project.

For the best shooters (the Cave ones ) you do have to chip your PS2 or get a japanese one:

I think you can get a disk called breakers to allow you to play import psone games on your ps2.

i would then suggest einhanders and thunder force v (i dont think they got a pal release)

Try r types and r type delta on psone both worthwhile purchase.

Silpheed - average, nice looking, hollow gameplay

XII Stag - old skool and retro to the core but its just too dated for my liking with graphics akin to mobile phone games and exceeded by most freeware pc shooters

Mind you i got them for a fiver each so i guess you can't complain but if you're interested in ps2 shooters then importing is most definetly the way to go

Gradius 3 an 4 is quite a nice pack if u like ur gradius games, complements 5 anyway ^_^

my personal suggestions are: Gradius V and R-Type Final over all, then Silpheed. Psyvariar is a good one, but I've found it too easy...

about "abstract" games, if you're interested in PS1 games, you can't miss N2O.

on PS2 you can also get Frequency and its sequel Amplitute. but they're more rythm games, than shooters...
