    Half-Life 2: Minerva mod

If, like me, you?re getting tired of waiting for Half-Life 2 expansions The Lost Coast and Aftermath, here?s something that might satisfy your hunger for a little while.

Minerva is a cracking little mod by Adam Foster, one that takes you out of the shoes of Gordon Freeman (leaving that firmly in the hands of the people that do it best ? Valve) and into an unknown character (although a little backstory does get hinted at but I won?t spoil that here).

The plan is to release Minerva as episodes and so Minerva Part 1: Metastasis is quite short (around an hours playtime), but very, very sweet.

Dropped onto a mysterious Combine controlled island you are under orders (from your faceless and, quite frankly, sadistic commander in chief) to investigate what the enemy forces have been up to. I won?t say any more as that?d spoil it, but Minerva so far is something worthy of every HL2 owner?s attention.

The double speak and verbose text (both in game on and the games site) is designed to be a bit confusing but the mod is highly polished with some nice level design and a decent challenge. Minerva also features some subtly remixed HL2 music along with nicely done original composition. It even has some nods in the general direction of the main Half-Life story, making it feel like a direct expansion of Valve?s world without treading on their toes and maintaining an original slant on things.

Hopefully this is the start of some decent mods that the HL2 engine has been crying out for and up until now have been few and far between (probably due to the time taken to put together something semi-decent).

You can find more on the mod, and download it at http://www.hylobatidae.org/minerva/phosphenes.shtml (it's only a dinky 14Mb too)

Let?s also hope that part two of this story isn?t too long in being released

Ahhh excellent. I've been looking forward to some decent HL2 single player mods. I'll be checking this out tomorrow I should think.

          Nice. Very nice.

Thanks for the heads up Spatial. I don't keep track of the mod community so this came as a nice surprise... a very professionally put together game with some highly intelligent level design (the way it's converged and weaved in together over the course of the episode) and solid production. I also thought the story was intriguing...

anyone else think the player is a Combine guard or half-modified Stalker being controlled by a resistence member holding a grudge (perhaps they lost someone?). The character you control seems to be called a traitor and being punished for a past transgression...

I particularly liked the little expansions of Half-Life's already existing universe with small disturbing snippets on how Stalker's can melt . The game, although darker and a little more mysterious (so far) than Half-Life 2, certainly felt of its universe.

And, thankfully, no stuttering at all. I think the caching is handled slightly differently than Half-Life 2 because it came up with a caching bar upon loading for the first time. The sound effects and music sounded slightly different too.

Overall, a strong mod with decent level, atmosphere and narrative design. And a good size for people without BB (I'm surprised how much was fit into 14mb, although I do realise Half-Life 2's assets must be being used a lot).

I look forward to seeing more of this.

Yep, those were my thoughts about the character as well

The fact that the player is dropped in by (a rogue?) Combine helicopter, and the faceless commander calls you a traitor (who would have ended up like the Stalkers if he hadn't saved you), made me think you're a Combine solider. He seemes to treat you with utter distain and admirable respect for your abilities in equal measure.

I liked the way that the modder had put puddles of green goo under the transportation capsule to simulate the Stalkers melting. I think that's supposed to be the result of them being stuck in transportation pods for so long with no nutrients etc. Someone has just left them there to die and rot, with bits of them seeping out from the containers. Yuck!

I also loved the way that the island is pretty much one level so there's limited loading, and the design of the interior is really something else.

Like I said, hopefully part 2 won't be too long in the making as I'm keen to see what happens next

Played through the first part of the level last night, very well made indeed.

Excellent stuff! The level design was tight, the pacing spot on, and some great music too. The highlight for me has to have been when you enter the interior section - the buildup of tension was fantastic!

If I had to gripe about something it'd probably be that the aqcuisition of your arsenal was unnecessarily swift - you could've made do with just one or two weapons for the whole thing - but that's a minor problem. Good stuff, cheers for the link.

I'm having a problem with this. I can load the mod by choosing it from the Steam 'Play games' menu, and it loads to the title screen. When I select new game, it brings up a window with2 options: Play game and Cancel, but clicking on Play game doesn't do anything. Nothing at all. Anyone else have this problem?

Have you made sure that Steam and HL2 are fully updated?

Just played this through now, the level design was excellent, although it did remind me of silent cartographer from the original halo (but on a smaller scale) - but thats no bad thing of course. Excellent pacing as was mentioned above, but the number of weapon and health drops available did reduce the tension somewhat as my health was always high and weapons well stocked (played through on hard) - the gaps between each 'refuel' should be much further. On the whole though it excellent and comes highly recommended to anyone who enjoyed HL2; looking forward to the next installment.

Isn't Adam Foster the guy who made the excellent HL mode They Hunger?

Great stuff, I particularly like the section when you first go underground. Lovely music, and very subtle atmosphere. It really felt like you were exploring something you shouldn't, especially as you got closer to the end.

I liked the messages you got too, gave it a fairly original twist and they were intriging to say the least.

I thought the design relied a bit too heavily on overwhelming you with enemies out of a single chokepoint, but it is still a real top-drawer effort.

Not wishing to appear thick, I'm afraid I must ask: how exactly do I do that? I thought Steam updated itself automatically. Ditto for HL2?

right-click the game in the game list and choose properties. there's a bit on updating - check to see if it's set to automatically update the game or not. i tend not to automatically update myself - the game will update when you try to run it - otherwise i find it decides to update while i'm in the middle of a CS match!
