Gamecube Anniversary

Well, it was four years old last week-September 14th, 2001, Nintendo launched the Gamecube in Japan (November 18th in the U.S., and May 3rd, 2002, in Europe).

Nintendo have made some major errors in the life cycle of this console, but they've also hosted some of this generations most original games. While attention has shifted recently to the next Nintando console, there's still some life in the old thing yet...

I bought the console for the release of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. It finally got me off my PS2, and had me happily sailing around for a couple of weeks. Fantastic visuals and excellent controls. Still a great game...

Anyone else have a favourite GC moment?

It's all about Capcom to be honest. They made the Cube what it is in my opinion this generation, and perhaps for the first time in Nintendo's history, upstaged them on their own format.

Great console but it could never live up to its older brothers in the form of the N64 and SFC. That's my view anyway.

Died on it's arse in the end really, still some good stuff coming but the last year it has been murderkilled in the west.

The Capcom 5 (then 4) were the standouts for me too-Killer 7, Resident Evil 4, Viewtiful Joe and P.N. 03 all showed what the 'Cube was capable of. But games like Billy Hatcher and Pikmin gave us plenty to smile about too.

This isn't a comprehensive list, but it certainly shows there's no lack of innovation coming to the Cube. Most of these are U.S. releases, although that shouldn't stop anyone with a Freeloader...

Chibi alone makes the cube the home console I'm currently most excited about, and Kirby, and Zelda, and... >_< no wonder I never have any student loan left...

Highlight, hmmmmm can't think of too many for me, the cube has just managed to regularly deliver me a game worth playing.

Star Wars RS II knocked my socks off the day I got that on its USA launch. Resident Evil was simply awesome too.
And why most tend to hate the style , Zelda TWW looked simply Simply incredible (still does) some of the most amazing Art Direction I?ve ever seen in a game

i got the gamecube because capcom had signed a deal with nintendo to make some games and dont regret buying it as it has been my second most played console and has some excellent games for it. its just a shame the console didn't take off and have more third party games developed for the system.

it has been my first nintendo console and i shall be looking forward to revolution. i hope they make coloured one as i love my spice gamecube

I got a Japanese GC in early 2002 in preparation for the release of biohazard and I've never been without one since. I was instantly smitten with the wee fella - everything from the machine's design, to the controller, the cool hardware add-ons, it's graphical performance, the non-existant load times and those weird little DVDs and cute gameboxes. Even the name "GameCube" was great...it just like felt a special machine from day one.

There have been many highlights, including the amazing biohazard 4 just a few months ago, or feverishly awaiting the release of F-Zero GX and realising that it WAS as stunning as I hoped it would be. But the pinnacle was probably spending Christmas 2002 with Japanese Wind Waker. Being forced (because of the language barrier) to explore every nook and cranny of that superb cartoon gameworld just made it even better.

I got my Cube a few weeks after launch (had to wait for uni exams to end!) and it's been the only current generation console I've had (and needed, really) until I got an Xbox this year.

Absolutely wonderful machine; I could never be without Nintendo's consoles, and they, along with Capcom etc, have provided so many top games! I'm in agreement with everything you say in the first paragraph there, Kubrick.

The first game I got was Smash Bros Melee, which kept me and my mates well entertained over the summer of 2002, then I reckon my favorites since then would have to be Wind Waker, Tales of Symphonia and Metroid Prime. Games like these remind me of one of the reasons I love videogames; they create worlds, atmospheres or stories that you can totally immerse yourself in.

Really looking forward to Chibi Robo, and of course the new Zelda!

I have to say although the gamecube is a decent console it is nintendo at their worst, still although its not a patch on their previous consoles there is still much fun to be had. Smash bros, mariokart dd, resi4, mario sunshine, f-zero gx, monkeyball, animal crossing, and metroid prime are all great games and seeing that the console can be picked up for peanuts there is absolutely no excuse not to experiance those games.

Great console. I thought Nintendo were at there best when not trying to rehash N64 titles. Animal Crossing, Pikmin and Metroid Prime being the Nintendo stand outs for me.

But as Concept said: it's all about Capcom who just got better and better on it culminating in Resi 4 (some will say Killer 7 I'm sure but personally Resi 4 was the winner for me). A mate saw me playing that one day and went out and bought a cube just for that.

Agreed mate. For me its like the Mega CD and SEGA.
Great machines just under used my the makers of the consoles in the 1st place, and owe a lot to 3rd party's efforts in making the machines worth getting

Maybe not the SNES, but it's been a much better machine than the N64.
