I'm sure stuff like Head over Heels was similar.
Oh yes. I remember that well.

Although actually - Metal Slug, Ikaruga.. these are examples of 'modern' games where everything you meet is an unforeseen obstacle. Until you have learnt through experience what it is going to do, there is surely NO WAY you could survive a typical Metal Slug boss. And if you die = back to the start.
Not really the same though. In Metal Slug or Ikaruga, you learn, develop a forumla and eventually overcome. That's very different to not knowing you're going to come across a boss or a group of unavoidable enemies that require ammo you didn't know you had to horde squirrel-like to beat.

Yes, but she was a whiney, spoilt little wench.

One of the game's highlights for me was deliberately letting one of those giants pick her up and slam her into the ground.

The way she bounced makes me smile to this day.

Barrels shall not automatically explode on contact with bullets and grenades can be used to blow open doors that you need some magic key for.

For someone who "ducked when you aimed near her", I managed to shoot Ashley's satellite-dish ears enough.

One of my pet-hates: Locked Wooden Doors.

If I'm armed with a weapon and I suddenly come to one of the many locked wooden doors in a game, I should be able to interact with said locked door and blow the thing of it's hinges, however, as well know, this is not the case.

My suggestion: Locked METAL doors, which can at least withstand some degree of force.

It was like that game red faction so much potential. But then you come across doors that cannot be blown up or gone around.
