Whichever way you look at it - classification wise - Wipeout Pure and Burnout Legends PSP aren't exactly nibbling at the same evolutionary branch of gaming are they? For sure, both involve racing. One in a spaceship, with weapons, and the other in a car bashing your opponents off the the road. Similar, perhaps. But then Legend of Zelda Windwaker is fundamentally similar to God of War, in a "3D wandering about hitting things with a pointy object" sense.

So if Wipeout Pure (which is good, I accept) can't be considered a better racer than Burnout Legends, you're left with:

    Colin Mcrae PSP
    Toca 2 PSP
    Ridge Racers PSP

By any objective viewpoint, (and I own two of them, and have played the third) we're in a different league with BL:PSP, graphically, sonically, and content wise. Colin and TOCA 2 are both good as they go, but don't quite hang together. And Ridge Racers. Come on. You probably got it as your first or second game. You annoyed your workmates by showing them the intro video 4 times. And then you played it to death for about 3 days. But after that? Seriously? It has no depth. None. It's like 1995 all over again. You don't even race, you chase 15 cars, catching them up one by one, until you find one that's about the same speed as you. Again. And again. And again.

Burnout Legends, even if you don't like it, or find it "rough around the edges" is the best racer on the PSP by a country mile. It's a fact. Like Hitler being a genocidal maniac, or Golden Grahams tasting funny to non-Americans. It's Avogadro. Non arguable. Pi. The big bang. Evolution.

There is a nice little dig at EDGE in the 3DO article I think about Rise of the Robots and a 'certain publication' calling it the future. Made me chuckle anyway...

I've still got that issue of EDGE - it's what made me covet a 3D0 in the first place.

There isn't any fact about it. An opinion is what it is. Though I'm sure what you said was meant in jest.

In your view, Burnout Legends is superior. In my own, I prefer Wipeout Pure.

They're different games of course, but I simply prefer the speed, involvement, course design, atmosphere and presentation in Pure. It's a return to form for an ailing series, as is Ridge Racers.

Burnout Legends isn't. By all means, it's an extension of a series that seems to be improving with every game. However, like Ish, I found myself unfairly comparing Legends to Revenge, simply due how closely both have been released. While I could lie and say it wasn't in technical terms, the fidelity and crispness which Revenge expresses in nearly every department... the quality and sheer fun it provides hasn't translated well to the PSP. Of course I wasn't expecting the same extravagance (especially considering they're two separate entites), but I've found other games on the PSP have made better use of the hardware. The Xbox felt as though it were being pushed to its limits and all the amazing thoughtful touches were outstanding. I don't quite get that sensation on the PSP (the same attention to detail).

Ridge Racers has brought Namco's flagship racer back out of the wilderness, and Wipeout Pure is innovating in several areas for a handheld title - most notably in its downloadable content which has mutated and transformed the content available to almost double what we saw originally.

We could move around in circles addressing each others points, but to be honest, and with all due respect, I don't think either of us wants to be embroiled looping around in the one man upmanship which plagues so many other forums. Besides, it'd derail this thread.

For what it's worth, Legends, Pure and Ridge Racers are all very good games. The former just wasn't for me.

I could find you plenty of people who deny evolution and the big bang - they might not be comorbid with people who rate Burnout Legends, mind.
