P123 - Buzz!: The Music Quiz review...

"Most sound as if they are being played on some form of "My First Keyboard" that Tomy may of released in 1983..."

Tut tut. Write out the correction 100 times before dawn or I'll cut your bollocks off.

Not so much your comment, really, just the article they wrote. I do like Games TM. It's nice having a magazine that features current and retro gaming, and it's just nice having an alternative gaming read that isn't Edge And I suppose I feel rather foolish now, considering all the times I've argued with my friends over why they should pick up a copy of Games TM. Feel a bit, well, daft.

Still, I should be getting a harder shell to these things by now.

I haven't read the issue yet (too lazy to drag myself into the bowels of townburbia), but ventures such as Ubisoft's Frag Dolls are always going to attract a certain level of cynicism from some people (whether rightly or wrongly).

I know, I know. Everyone is entitled to their opinions too, and it's naive and a foolish venture to think that we wouldn't be receiving this kind of response. It's just the kind of person I am, that's all. I'll get used to it.

Still, if anything, take it as a compliment - I wouldn't care a fraction as much if it weren't for this particular publication.

I'll be fine once I have a cup of tea.

See, I feel bad now... the intention wasn't to upset you girls, as it was to point out the corporate guff that lies behind the inception of the Frag Dolls. If anything, we're more pro-girl gamer than anything now - I'm looking to organise some kind of tie-in with PMS in the near future, and generally push stuff like this. No offence, Jam... honest.

Wasn't one of you supposed to be writing a column for us anyway? We've been asking Ubisoft to sort that out for months now...

Thanks for replying to me - it is appreciated, and thanks for the kind words. I just get rather passionate and protective about certain things, and in this line of work it is easy to become overly defensive. But hey, it's all done and dusted.

Never heard about this column idea though, and double checked with Ubi. Be happy to help! I gather you should be expecting a phone call, but if not, feel free to gimme a PM or something.

And again, for the record, thanks.

True to my word I did give the sofb feature a read. Nicely done Strider, though it is a shame you couldn't get Martin Edmondson too. The article would have obviously benefitted from his input since lets face it, the game was graphically sex on legs.

Also you never asked a question I've long wanted to know the answer to... why were beast 2 and 3 so graphically inferior to the original? It was almost like a different (crapper) artist had taken over?

Other then that my only guess is that Mr Edmondson was continually pissed from all the profits from the first one!

Personally, I always preferred SOTB2 to the first one. It wasn't that it was easier, looked better or had better gameplay... it was for that wailing guitar solo that played when you died.

                              Awesome.

It was all to do with the technical limitations of the Amiga. Games like Beast ran in dual playfield mode, which only gave you a paltry 8 colours per playfield (plus 16 for the main character sprite, or 3 if you wanted the sprite to be wide (as it was in Beast 2 with the mace extended)).

The Amiga's genius was that it allowed those 8 colours to be retasked on every line of the screen (and later in the system's life clever coders were even able to re-task them across each line). Beast 1 used this to an enormous extent but was then limited to keeping those stunning outdoor scenes on a flat plane.

With Beast 2 the idea was to extend the gameplay by allowing much more vertical movement, but that meant those colour splits were much harder to use.

The same artist (Martin Edmondson) did the art on all 3 Beast games, it was just the technical side of things that changed a lot.

Personally I thought Beast 2 was by far the best of the bunch.

I haven't seen Martin for quite some time. Last I heard he was living a life of luxury in various cities.
