I somehow managed to delete my gamecube saves a few months back - again on an unofficial memory card.

I think it was somehting to do with saving a US Game save on a memory card full of UK game saves.

Anyway, lost my 100% complete RE4 save, up to the last level in Killer 7, Almost compete Mario Sunshine save, Completed Wind waker save.

I was gutted, truly gutted. Havnt bothered digging out my gamecube since.

(Twilight Princess will be the last reason to get the cube out again)

Two interesting things happened to me a few years back on the n64...

I booted up my copy of super mario 64, and was shocked and dismayed to see that my save file with 120 stars was wiped out, so I started a new file, got around 15 stars, then powered the console off. A couple hours later I turn on the n64 again, and see that my original 120 star file is back, and the new one was gone!

What scared that crap out of me though, was when I tried turning on Perfect Dark. I power up the console, and a red message comes up saying that the cartridge was damaged and couldn't play properly. I turned off the console, sat back in the chair for a few minutes, scared as hell, trying to understand what the hell just happened, because I had spent ages on that game and had almost completed it on Perfect Agent and with most cheats and couldn't believe what the **** was going on. A few minutes later, once I regained some courage, I take it out of the n64, and put it back in, turn it on and it worked with my save file intact! Was so relieved, but at the same time pissed that my n64 was playing these goddamn awful tricks on me, especially since I was quite stressed during that period as it was.

So not quite stories about permanent loss of save files.

I've lost too many saturn saves to contemplate thinking about them all over again.

          Beat this.....

My flat was broken into and PS1 stolen with all my games. They were all replaced on insurance, but obviously the saves on the memory cards were lost. On these were:

FFVII - Over 100 hour save including: all characters at level 100, all Master Weapons, All Level 4 limit breaks (with another save including limit 4 for Aeris), all materia including master materia and all enemy skills.

Gran Turismo - 100% on GT mode and Arcade mode

          Castlevania SOTN: 200% completion

R-Types: Top leaderboard position for single crediting R-Type

Tekken 1, 2 and 3: All characters, FMW and unlocks

Plus others I have forgotten about now.

How gutted was I? Luckily the thieves had no taste and left my N64 and Saturn collections alone.

            (Puts on nerdy glasses)

Level 99 was the highest you could get on FF7

Yep, you are right. I obviously never bothered to do it again, so It's been a while. I do remember my save stopping at 100 hours though, although in reality it was a lot more.

I lost my F-zero GX save which was 100% apart from 2 story modes on v.hard.

That card had my SSB DX save on it too, which I have had for a long time

@Buster Broon - I thought Goldeneye saved to the cart directly? So how could you save to memory card?

As for myself, the once and only time I've nuked a card by accident is formatting my Japanese Cube 59 when in US mode. I only had two game saves on it at the time so it wasn't so bad, except for the fact one of them was Smash Bros DX and I had everything done, unlocked and achieved apart from a few trophies.

Now this is a topical thread, I fancied a quick blast on GoldenEye the other night but when I turned the machine on my saves had all disappeared! The only thing that really bothered me was losing every single cheat - I had all the extra missions and levels unlocked and every cheat. I really don't have the stomach to face speed-running the whole game again

Strange thing is, I'm sure I heard somewhere that N64 carts had flash RAM rather than batteries.

And I'm sure we've all lost to our old friend the Lithium Ion battery. Personally I still miss my Zelda saves from the NES and SNES

                      I had one of these:

Blaze MPXchanger to make backups it said, of my N64, Playstation and Dreamcast games.

In reality it had awful software and wiped my PS1 memory card with my FFVII, Gran Turismo and Soul Reaver saves..... grrrr. To add isult to injury, you needed an adapter to use dreamcast VMU's in it which I don't think ever came out!

The action replay carts allowed for you to backup Cart data and store them on a memory card.

Only two, but they stung badly. Both caused by frustration/auto-save.

                          1. Burnout. The first one, tough as nails... lost all my progress and unlocked tracks following a frustrated reset after a marginal loss. Never went back to it.

                          2. Guitar Freaks 3rd mix. After months of practice I'd managed to finish every song with the exception of 'Classic Party'. Some of these scores were flukes that I'd never been able to repeat. I was so determined to finish Classic Party that I got pissed off at losing again, reset... all scores gone.

Nightmare scenario!! God I'm wincing just thinking about that, my hand is already twitching with pain at the thought of doing it all again. I think I'll keep my GC cards in a fireproof safe.

GTA San Andreas - twice both at around 50% with 20-30 hours each
GTA 3 - thought I had a duplicate on another card so deleted it - had around 60%
GTA: VC - same as GTA3 but with 90% and around 60 hours

Wind Waker, Mario Sunshine, Luigis Mansion - unofficial card now needs formatting Good thing I backed up the Wind Waker save.

I lost GoldenEye once, had everything done 100%, all levels, all cheats, all characters/maps etc, absolutely everything, on all 4 save files (it just felt right) it was a great achievement and consumed much of my life at the time. And a while after, it'd been a while since i'd played, a friend asked if he could borrow it and i stupidly agreed, only to get it back completely empty, needless to say i went ballistic, all i got was "er..sorry", it still angers me to this day, I eventually did complete it again, although the quote above is something i wasn't aware of and now i'm slightly worried that my cart which i still have on a shelf is empty and it was all for nothing, i doubt i'd ever be able to do it again now.

Oh and I lost GTA:SA with 97% and 100+ hours through my own fault, after playing for a few hours i went to save and switched off the machine whilst it was saving, pads were thrown!
