DS Lite - First look!

Got myself an Enamel Navy DS Lite yesterday, after breaking my original DS over the weekend. Don't understand all the fuss about a black machine, I was more than happy to pay extra to have the lovely Enamel Navy one ^_^

Didn't expect to say this, but I'd recommend a Lite even to people who have the original DS, it's just much more of a joy to use, and the screen is vastly improved, not just in brightness and clarity, but even the colours - go fire up Sonic Rush, that looks like almost a totally different game,
The added clarity on the bottom screen does show up the overcompression in the backgrounds and cutscenes to RE though =(

I see they did away with the thumbstrap then - a Miyamoto idea that never took off. Probably cause it was a load of **** in the first place.

It is super clear, but I never owned the original DS because it was just a nasty looking console, but this thumb strap thing was useless? because I have Mario 64 and trying to play it using your finger is pretty difficult and using the stylus isnt really practical, is there another solution?

The thumbstrap was a nice idea, but it just didn't work. It was supposed to 'emulate' analogue control by using the touchscreen, but since there's no 'center point' like there is with an analogue stick or a D-Pad, it becomes a real chore to maintain control while keeping some kind of center position on the screen to maintain freedom to move.

Mario64 was designed to be played using ananlogue control, so it doesn't really work out very well on the DS IMO.

Just got an email from Amazon saying that the Lite is released on the 26th??

I thought it was the 23rd? I've got a pre-order in at Gameplay and it better still be the 23rd.

Does anyone know anything about this? Which date is correct?

On their website Amazon have the white lite down for release on 23rd June but the black version as 25th June

The Nintendo Europe website is showing 23rd June for both versions so it looks like Gameplay are spot on with what they told you.

NOE announced it to come out on the 23rd on their VIP website, i don't see how that could be wrong.

Hmm, this is all very odd. Hope the 23rd date is correct as I'm going away that day! I've been told Gameplay ship their's early plus I've paid an extra fiver for next day delivery so I hope it turns up on the 23rd!!

Pre-ordered one in Game today, got ?30 knocked off with one of my SP's. Am really having a hard time in choosing a colour, the White is easily the definative choice in Japan but i bet this black one is going to look the bees knees.

What condition was the SP in that you traded in for this?

was it fully boxed with the charger or just the machine?

It was pretty mint t'was a red one too, as long as it has a charger and is in one piece i don't think they'll be that arsed. If you have one take it in anyway and stick it on a gift card, you've nothing to lose .

yeah i've got a black one that i paid ?20 for and if they offer ?30 for it, seems a decent offer and with the gift vouchers i've had since last year this would be ?50 off the total

I've been checking ebay for a cheap one but no such luck, seem to be selling in the region of ?40 which is higher than i expected.

I don't know if anyone else finds this....but when i compared my Japanese DS to my friend's European one, the European one felt as if it was lower build quality than mine. Like the plastic on the console, the stylus, the hinge, etc. Wonder if this'll be the same for the Lite?

How do GBA games look on the DS Lite? Better than on the original DS?

Yep, better. They are really sharp but some are nasty on the eyes because the colours on the Lite are really hot. Too hot in my opinion. GBA games still look better on the Micro I think.

Micro is definitely better for GBA games than the DS Lite IMO. I havent tried a new SP in a while or original DS so cant comment there, but if i'm going to play some Gunstar or Chu Chu its got to be on the Micro.
