    Gaming myths

Just received my copy of Gradius Portable and I was busy testing out Gradius 2 when I had a memory recall as I reached the boss at the end of the first level.

When I was younger there used to be a local game shop that used to have 4-5 coin-ops at one end of the shop, one of them was Gradius 2. There were a bunch of people, including myself, that used to frequent the shop just to play Gradius 2 (and R-Type 2) and I remember over hearing one of them telling his mate that if he crashed into the foot of the level 1 boss as it was blowing up it, and timed it just right, he would be transported to a secret level. This wasn't just a mate taking the piss, he really had heard that there was this mind-blowing mythical level hidden somewhere in the game and that was the key to unlocking it. More people caught wind of this and for months I saw people nose diving their Vic Viper into the bosses foot, I even tried it myself a couple of times.

I never did see that hidden level...

A few years later...a new arcade opened up within an entertainment complex nearby, their main attraction was Ridge Racer - another game that used to empty my pockets of loose change. Once again, I overheard someone saying that on lap two of the normal track you could unlock a hidden track by driving through a section of wall on the right hand side of the main straight. Their reasoning? There was a van on the fly over with a big yellow sign and an arrow pointing to this magical gateway. The catch was it was only accessible for a split second (obviously) and you had to time it right with the position of the van. I saw many people wasting thier 50p's by slamming their cars into that wall. It wasn't helped by the fact there was one guy who swore blind he'd done it. He used to give detailed descriptions of this track to anyone that would listen.

I never did see that hidden track either....funny that.

Anyone else got any gaming myths?

I seem to remember someone telling me there was a nudey Chun Li ending if you finished SF2 perfecting everyone in every round. Thankfully I just watched the manga film and didn't have to endure such a task.

Not so much a gaming myth but I remember telling my mate that if he jumped in the lava on the second stage of Sonic the Hedgehog he`d get a load of extra lives.

He did it but lives were taken away!

Well the Sheng Long SF2 rumours persisted for years and were ignited every time a new version was released. Many people seemed utterly convinced he was a character in the game.

Also, what I thought was quite cool was that there was a Dhalsim teleport rumour that flew around for a while - supposed to be a glitch and, again, people swore blind that they had seen him teleport. When Hyper Fighting was released, Capcom had made it a move.

I remember C+VG claiming that there was a 3D shoot'em-up that let you control the spaceship from the CD player hidden in the Sega Saturn.

That's the first thing that sprang to mind with me. I used to read EGM and it became a running joke for them to print it every April issue and each year it got more and more ludicrous but people still believed it. The all time classic was when one of the UK magazines (might have been CVG, actually) printed it where part of the code was to press a button to the tune of an All Saints song that hadn't been released when Tomb Raider came out.

I seem to remember one about Knuckles on the Megadrive? Some version of the game was sold as a cartridge passthrough so another cartridge could be plugged in on top. If you plugged a certain game (which could be any) and found a green hedgehog with blobs for feet you won a large prize...this is all a while ago though, details are foggy.
