You could enter witchspace fairly reliably with a cheat on the Spectrum release, and it did happen randomly on the others as well. You're probably thinking of the old myth about finding a Generation Ship.

Yup, thargoids were real. I had quite a few dog fights with them in my time as a space trader. I think the cheat was something to do with jumping to hyperspace whilst docking, or something like that.

When I got my Jap copy of FF8 somebody told me that there was away to turn English on, I never confirmed this, although later on when I had my english copy I found the "debug" room, did the Jap copy have the option to change language in this room?

Actually you?re getting your CVG April Fool?s mixed up. April 1997 was the original Tomb Raider one where they said you had to make Lara dance to the beat of Spice Girl?s Wannabe (I think they may have also had another 2 April Fool?s in that issue too).

The following year they basically repeated the fool for Tomb Raider 2 but changed the song to the All Saints one.

As for the FFVIII debug room, no it wouldn't allow you to turn it into English. When the Japanese version came out they would have still been translating it.
