This system EA are talking about would be like buying a box of chocolates but stopping you opening the last few until you pay some more money for no whatsoever other than the greed of the chocolate company.
No it wouldn't - the entire content is still there regardless of whether you pay extra to unlock it or not, it just means less time spent ploughing through the single player game to unlock content that you wish to play via multiplayer.

To use your chocolate box analogy - it would be like buying a box of chocolates, paying someone to take out all the ones you don't like and just consuming the ones that you do

Isn't it more like buying a box of chocolates but your fingers are to fat to be able to get at the last few, so you pay some more money to have EA put them in your mouth?

What are we talking about again

Yes but I think the point is he HAS already paid for the courses. The cost of the disc covers/recoups the development costs - Not the little ****ty unlock key they make him pay for. Pay for new downloadable courses - yes, for courses on the disc - no.
He isn't paying for the courses - what he would be paying for is the time it would take to unlock the courses if he would be playing through the single player game, time he could spend actually playing the game against his mates (or having a wank etc - whatever took his fancy to use in that free time).

I don't think he has paid for the courses. He's paid for the oppurtunity to unlock the courses.

From another point of view, in last year's Tiger Woods, if you didn't want to play through the single player game then you couldn't get the extra courses. This option just gives you more choice (albeit at a cost).

What happens if you're playing the next EA James Bond (or third person adventure considering they don't have the licence any more) and players can buy their way up a few levels while the rest can just play through the game to unlock them?

It destroys structure, narrative or otherwise.
I think you're forgetting that most games have had unlockable codes in them for years. Input a code into GTA and you can completely 'destroy' the game.

Maybe charging for this is not such a bad idea?

It?s no surprise that EA would charge money for what are essentially cheat codes. Unlocking button codes have been in games for as long as I remember, there's not a single justifiable reason to start asking money for them.

I have no real issue with the Tiger Woods thing. I have played games that I simply don't have the skill or time to complete. I don't necessarily want all my games to have everything unlocked either. This just gives people the choice.

If however EA were charging to skill up a character for online purposes etc then i would have a big problem with it.

But the Madden thing kind of sucks. Firstly all the help that people need to play a complex game like Madden should be available from the start. Its easy to see when playing online that people simply have no comprehensio of what they are doing. Also, Madden has a bad habit of incomplete manuals which don't include all available moves etc.

mind you there are other guilty parties who do this...Pro Evo is a big one.

Excellent news, I've been hoping for a FIFA 07 demo for a while. Now let's see if it actually is any good this year or whether EA are talking crap yet again.

It's sposed to be nice from the impressions on evo-web so far. You now have a slider for how 'magnetic' the passing is, so a stab of the button doesn't auto-send it to a player, you have to aim.
