Anyone wanna bet that Nintendo calls their pre-E3 conference Wii3?

It's been almost 24 hours since I first heard about the name change and I still can't take it seriously, I tried telling customers at the store I work in about the Wii name to gauge a reaction from your average punter & they all just gave an expression that screamed WTF?.

At least in the US a lot of people refer to Nintendo consoles by the manufacturer's name and not the consoles name itself i.e. "wanna play some Nintendo" but I can't say the same for people in the UK, we do like our toilet humour though so maybe the British public will splash out on a Wii for the comedy value alone.

      No it's wee.

      Taken from Ninty's site:

"...Because, it's really not about you or me.

      It's about Wii.

And together, Wii will change everything."

      Yeah, like snow yellow.

Chiming with things like Viao and iPod, that would be a perfectly acceptible name imo. And I doubt anybody would seriously begrudge the sudden turnaround, given the alternative...
Why. I think you've hit the nail squarely on the head.

Wii is unlikely to be "another SNES" or familiar to anything else for that matter. Those expecting something familiar in terms of success or game design are going to be hillariously perplexed.

There isn't going to be a "Mario 128" or Zelda, for Revolution, let's put it that way, (or even if there is, the style of the game is going to hugely different to anything we've seen before).

Oh, and the name? "Introducing Wii. As in 'we'" Haha! Worst name ever. Jesus...... .

I wonder if there will be any good pre-E3 Wii leaks.

Isn't that's a bit highbrow in a 40 or so page thread of willy and piss jokes?

                            What is the big deal?

The name is what it is, the decision was never in anyone but Nintendo?s hands, it seems as if it is never going to change, so why get worked up?

Go to IGN and go to the Wii site they have, skip the stuff about the new name and read all the stuff that has been written about the console in recent weeks/months...you will see that nothing has changed. The reasons why I want to buy the console are still there: it looks fantastic, it will be totally original, it sounds like it will be brilliant fun, and the games I dreamt of playing on it seem to be becoming a reality.

I like the look of the logo, but have difficulty "saying" it without it sounding odd, I mean that in a grammatical way. But as I said before, it is what it is, how on earth it will change the perception of those of us who actually already know what the console is about and what it stands for is beyond me.

My entry into the 404 page contest is now apparently the official "not found" redirect for YTMND.com. I didn't even find out until a month after the fact...

It won't - but here you've hit the nail on the head - the people that don't know about that machine or what the machine is about are going to see Wii. It's a big deal because it's a huge marketting blunder for Western audiences, and that is a problem.

PS3 and Xbox360 are building on already established brand names. As has been mentioned numerous times, and should be totally apparent from this thread alone, Wii has very negative connotations. As Brats mentioned previously, branding is a huge influence on a product's marketting, by calling your product Wii, you're digging a grave for yourself. Regardless of whether it's childish, people do think of Wii in negative terms. This isn't good for any product.
