How Nintendo will successfully market Wii will be a story in itself. Marketing hasn't been one of Nintendo's strong points for over a decade now, there not like Sony or even Microsoft in that respect. With a crap name for a console and Nintendo crap at marketing, this is definitely time for concern. And when people turn round and say "oh it's all about the games" yeah but that's a gamers moto, it's not joe public's where image and style is everything.

It's not always about the games, it's the marketing as well and if Nintendo think the Wii is going to have an easy time in the later department (especially in the UK, where the Nintendo brand is already in ruins) then they've got another thing coming.

I'll buy the system regardless of the name, but there are many, many people out there that won't. And if the Wii goes down the ****ter, then only Nintendo have themselves to blame.

Their marketing for DS seemed pretty good to me, lots of advertisement, trailers and stuff. Plus lots of people bought it so I'd consider it good marketing.

The name Wii doesn't seem to be much of a problem in the US its only the UK where Nintendo the name is an issue.

I guess europe and the rest of the world wont see a problem with the name wii.

Nintendo will market it in the UK the same as the Cube, ie **** all.

Yeah, it's better than there usual, but in the living room they haven't got a leg to stand on. There marketing for consoles such as the N64 and the NGC have been extremely poor across the board.

Or the making. You know what they say... any publicity is good publicity.

Of course it's an utterly stupid cliche that barely ever pans out as said.

Nintendo are just narrowing their potential demographic audience by using this name.

I thought that too but the 1up article linked a few pages back seems to say that the problem is the same in the US.

I suppose it's probably due to their handheld status and popularity.

Maybe, but if Nintendo don't change the name especially in the UK, can you blame anybody for taking dig's at it, even unintentional ones. I predict the Wii sales in the UK at launch as 0 if they keep the name. SO PRETTY PLEASE (WITH CHERRY ON TOP) NINTENDO DO US ALL A FAVOUR AND JUST CHANGE THE F**KING NAME FOR THE UK, IT'LL SAVE YOU A LOAD OF GRIEF.

                    Even if i'am importing it.

Absolutely, Nintendo want to target gamers and non-gamers alike with the revolutionary style of play of the system, but not with a name like Wii they aren't.

Hats off to Nintendo this is the best case of Engrish yet, no doubt to the Japanese Wii sounds cool. I?m hoping this is some kind of sick joke or a clever publicity stunt.

The problem is the name is an offensive word in the west, reminds me of the whole French Connection thing. While it?s got most of the hardcore gamers talking at the moment in the long run it will damage sales. Some store may even refused to stock a console pronounced as "Wee or Why".

I would be very surprised if the name wasn?t changed in the West, while I understand Nintendo wanted a name that said about gaming together but wouldn?t something like "Nintendo Union" been a better name?

I do wonder if Nintendo have named it Wii for the shock factor, but we may all be talking about it now on the net but when it comes to the launch who is going to be buying. Sure I myself will be hanging outside a shop at the launch, but how many people bar the die hard Nintendo fan?s will be with me?

I do wonder if this could well blow up in Nintendo face as many parents may well objective to buying a console for their children named Wii.

No doubt most store assistants will make some poor wee joke as you buy the thing, well at least we can still hope this generation will bring a revolution?

In the end I guess only time will tell, but worrying as I stood in the queue at GAME yesterday the only console people were asking about was the Playstation 3.

NO Parent is gonna not get a console just because it sounds like "wee".
If they do they are idiotic.

Also come a months time I doubt anybody but fanboys are gonna make urine references to the machine.
It's not that bad a name... and it's unlikely to change so deal with it

Serious gamers that respect Nintendo and want them to suceed with this new console are outraged simply because the name Wii will probably further damage Nintendo's image amongst certain gaming groups.

I have personally tried to get used to the name, but everytime I think or say Wii, it just amazes me how poor it sounds, let alone, stupid!

I don't think the problem is the name being offensive etc.. It's just a poor name at the end of the day, and will hardly boost the machines image, or garner respect as a ' cool item '

The name Wii doesn't sound strong, and certainly isn't making much of a positive statement. Revolution sounded much more positive and people could understand the vibe connected with it.

If this were simply a case of anti-Nintendo people mocking the name, or hardcore gamers trying to be clever, it wouldn't matter. Sadly.. this is far from the situation, and people are genuinely shocked and saddened by Nintendo's naming of such an important product!

The reason I'm not a fan of Wii is because it doesnt really have anything to do with the console other than the "ii = we" crap

I'm just looking forward to Reggie dealing with the name in his speech!
