With CD systems at least you can still keep your achievement on a memory card even if you sell the game
think you've hit the mail on the head

spend ages on final fantasy 7 and after i clocked up about 45-50hours and i beat the entire game including the new weapons that were released after you beat sephiroth and i cant find the memory card - when i sold that PS1 on i kept the memory card just incase i bought the game again and now i have

but after raking through my loft i just cant find it and i'm a wee bit gutted

N64 carts are battery-powered though so if you don't play them for a long time they just go blank anyway. You'll dig them out of the attic when you're a grandpa to show your grand-kiddies and there'll be nothing there, zip! I suppose flash RAM was still expensive back then.

I'm pretty sure N64 cartridges use EEPROM which means they should last forever.

N64 cartridges don't use batteries for the standard EEPROM save ones. Some carts use SRAM (more space) so they may contain batteries, can't remember, but also a few others use Flash (even more space) to save.
