Wii video footage - is this all really possible?

Check this out for a lengthy bit of video footage:

    http://www.play.com/Games/Wii/NAVSUB/5-/RegionHome.html

Can u really use that controller in that way to play golf, tennis, baseball & use it like a sword?

If it is then I'n even more blown away by this console than I already was!!

      Down boy (^_^)

Not everyone follows the news as closely as some of us, some people will not have heard.

A bit behind the times but yes it can.

Man I love that video. It's already become a defining part of videogame history.

        November seems so far away.

It's not a stupid question, because despite what everybody else might be telling you - no you can't. The revolution is a great idea, and it's the idea they are trying to sell you because no real software or final hardware exists yet.

As a developer i can tell you that you'll NEVER see a realistic sword fighting game on the revolution, while the pad does offer enough feedback to allow it to map the movements of a blade, how the hell am i supposed to code AI which can come up with effective blocks in real-time against any type of attack, what if the player stabs the wand rather than swipes it, what if the player decides to be silly and spin around with the pad, or throw the pad in the air making it spin 20 times per second.

It's like people who hold the lightgun right up against the screen, only this time they might not consider what they are doing to be completely retarded and would think the game/wii was at fault.

From a design pov you must rule these things out, which leaves you with a gesture based system where it looks at your sword movement and interprets what you're trying to do, but you're still limited to pre-defined moves which don't follow your wand movements exactly.

using the movement of the pad for one sided reactions such as hitting an object, be it baseball or tennis ball is perfectly possible, but anything which requires an inteligent response to the command such as realistic armed combat AI, or anything to math heavy (physics etc) is beyond the Wii.

That's a very good point. I suspect the Wii would hold many more gameplay possibilities if the machine packed more power... ironically, it might have stood to gain more from improved tech (in terms of pure gameplay) than its two rivals have done

Like you say - a console with a realistic and 'detailed' method of interaction, should be able to respond to the player's input with very detailed and realistic feedback.
For this reason (not graphics) I hoped that Nintendo wouldn't skimp on the revolution hardware. No point giving devs an amazing new input device if their ideas are then held back by hardware restrictions, right?

IMO that controller is just begging to be let loose in a sophisticated, physically-simulated world. Perhaps Nintendo should have chucked in a PPU or something?

Ah well, I guess there's always the need to sell a new console in five year's time
Whereas the other consoles (imo) feel like they've reached the end of their evolutionary path, the evolution of the Wii-style design template has only just begun.
If Nintendo are on to a hit this generation, I'm sure there'll be many revisions and advancements of the design to come in the future.

No, but it may well be beyond the capabilities of many coders. Which is not the same thing at all as being technically impossible to achieve on the console. I'm sure it'll be a rare development team indeed that can manage such a thing. But then, the same is true for any truly great game.

What I was trying to get across was that from info released prior was that it could be used to control a left, right, up, down & zoom type of movement. Nothing was mentioned about the fact that it could be used as an actual club, racket, bat or sword.

Pirotic understands what I'm saying because I also fealt that the ad was more of an exageration of what could be done, but I thought that some of u 'hardcore' gamers might have more info for a 'noob' like me.
