On handheld Switch, the sprites in MvC2 look worse than the other games, like they’re not quite being scaled well to fit the screen. Is that just a Switch issue? I don’t remember that being apparent back in the day.

I don't know if this is it - but the version of MvC2 in the collection is the arcade version, which is lower resolution than the one on the Dreamcast and other platforms.

Oh, I didn’t know that the arcade was a different res to the Dreamcast version. I only ever played the DC one before. It could be related to that - a different res to the CPS2 games and so requiring scaling and yet not quite high enough or even enough to scale nicely.

Capcom used Sega's NAOMI board for MvC2 so maybe an issue with the 3D models in that? Didn't the 360/PS3 port of MvC2 have similar res issues iirc?

Yeah, in fairness I hadn't noticed an issue but I hadn't looked that carefully. I've always thought MvC2 was a... unique... looking-game, what with it throwing together so many sprites from different game sources, along with that mixture of 2D & 3D elements that Capcom were so fond of at the time. I guess both Capcom vs SNK games were the closest thing.

It often came up with regards to the much-maligned Morrigan sprite in particular, especially in later games like the Capcom vs SNK ones. And it is more noticeable with her in MvC2 because she is a more basic sprite but it's across all of them. And thing is, the sprites in all the previous games are all in the right scale with each other. So it's not like CvS where it felt like the newer sprites weren't created at the same scale as the older ones (not sure that's actually what happened or if it's just a similar issue to what I'm seeing here). At some point when they went beyond CPS2, maybe something just went out of whack on the scaling.

Yeah, CvS2 was all over the place. The ones I always remember (though there were doubtless many other examples) were Kyosuke and Maki, because I'm pretty sure those were made, new, for the game, and the difference between them and Morrigan practically made you think you were playing a MUGEN fangame. Not that it really bothered me; I love CvS2 for what it was; I played it daily with friends for literally years.

Yep, there was no consistency in design style or pixel scale. Which is a shame because every new sprite they made for CvS was fantastic. I realise it would have been a lot of work but redoing all the old sprites would have resulted in a far better looking game.

With MVC2 I remember thinking at the time...imagine if they remade each sprite for the game, and tbh I know it would be a lot of work but would love to see a SSFTHD style game with all the sprites redrawn

Only good. With, like, decent animation maybe.

Above is the measured response to my initial draft of "BURN THE WITCH"

Oooh, oooh, can we do "Streets of Rage 4 looks like ClipArt" again?

Only if you hit us with another dose of "That artwork can't possibly be good because a single line in it isn't drawn straight enough!!"

                                Physical version out today...

But remember: Euro Switch physical version is code-in-a-box.
