Beautiful. Last week, I was wondering around my local CEX looking through the glass at some sorry looking yellowed unboxed consoles, but was shocked into a nostalgic glow when I saw Christmas NiGHTS staring back at me.

Good shout! I'm a huge fan of Motorsport and was worked up into a froth over GT5's release. That same year, I was working so damn hard on our project, I had so little holiday taken as we were shipping our game that year. When we released it in October 2010, I had so much banked holiday, I was able to take off the entire month of December that year. As such I needed something to do and with GT5 coming out in late November, the stars aligned.

For almost the entire month of December 2010, I was playing GT5 non-stop with a pedal and steering wheel, while in-between seeing friends, Christmas shopping and as I was still living at home at the time, spending time with my Mum and Brother. Happy times.

The game doesn't start in Christmas and it takes some time before the decorations actually appear in Dobuita Street (about mid December I think?), so the first time I saw the decorations was heading home after a shift on the forklifts, hearing music playing from shops and seeing the signs and garlands up whilst going down to the Tomato to get some stuff for the cat.
Reading your description of the game at Christmas really took me back to the game and what a lovely time I've had with Shenmue over the years. I might have to fire it up on PS5 and with the next few weeks off work before my new job starts in January, will have to revisit it.

Shenmue is GOATed. One of the most atmospheric games of all time. I didn't originally play it at Christmas but over a summer holiday, along with Shenmue 2. I've always preferred the first, though.

Definitely one of the most magical vibes any game has ever had. There's a special alchemy to it that's tough to define or articulate.

Besides Shenmue, another game that gets the Christmas thumbs up from me just happens to be another Dreamcast game, Blue Stinger.

I was thinking along the same lines ... so I checked the PS Store and I think it's the first time I've looked and it hasn't been on special offer Bah humbug

Overwatch always has great Christmas trees and decorations.

It seems there's been a stealth drop of an update to Stellar Blade that adds Christmas stuff!

Presumably this is partially for the pun, because as a game with a main character called Eve, she's now Christmas Eve.

I stone cold would have bet against it at the start of the year - amazed how well SB turned out, much better than Wukong

Yeah, "AA" console title by a mobile gacha waifu game developer in 2024... Felt like a recipe for disaster. This is probably one for the game's thread but I think it worked because the game feels like a PS2 game (in a way where that's more of a compliment than a criticism).

Aside from Shenmue, for me it's always this, the Jeuno music takeover for 20 years.
