Looks like it might be 24 player from all the grid makings at the start line. Although I can’t remember if 8 has that many.

There are a number of things in the trailer suggests it's 9:

• The track is far wider
• The track is new, not seen in 8
• Track appears to have multiple branching paths which could be the new gimmick
• Karts and characters are redesigned/changed/updated

Nah it's definitely 9 mate. Although it's certainly similar looking (when it first appeared on screen I thought, oh my god, it's 8 again), there are plenty of differences that indicate it's a new game. The 24 racers, the redesigned character and kart models, the new track etc, all the stuff Wargame says basically.

Watching the side-by-side comparisons... you know what... I think MK9 will be Switch 2 exclusive but I'm now feeling less certain. Given MK8 is a WiiU title MK9 definitely doesn't look 2 gens of a jump so if Nintendo think that they can get decent DLC sales out of it on Switch 1 for the next 2-3 years...

Also, if MK9 is a launch title, presumably DLC would start within 6 months of release and Super Mario Bros Movie 2 is out in April next year...

I'm also now of the view that the size of the track is a misleader - I'm not expecting the game to be open world. The most we might see is a revival of Diddy Kong Racing's Adventure mode (that franchise should be revived as a mid-gen counter proposition) but generally I expect it's just going to be a standard set up of GPs as a base for DLC ala Smash Bros.
