Yes and no I reckon. Nintendo are a company. Companies exist to make money. Lots of money. Nintendo, like all the other companies in the world, want you to buy their product. They want everyone to buy their product. I work for Scottish and Newcastle and believe me if we could stop you from buying anything other than our products we would. And I'd like that too as my pay would increase and my job security/opportunities get even better

it's freakin hard to resist to buy new hardware, I mostly find some reason around the launch of a new console to buy it.

I managed it this generation but I'm not sure it's going to be that easy this time around. My 360 cost nearly ?280, Xbox live membership another ?50, and now I'm about to spend about ?250 on a Wii and games. AND I had to buy a widescreen telly for the 360. Add to that the cost of 360 games and the inevitably inflated-at-retail prices for Wii games, and that doesn't exactly leave me with ?600 burning a PS3-shaped hole in my pocket.
