I've honestly never understood why some people love really hard games.
I guess it depends how you would define "really hard". Even stuff like Super G 'n G and shooters can be mastered in time if you're dedicated enough.

Personally, I quite enjoy tough games as long as they are fair. I rarely 1CC any shooters but as long as I feel it could be possible if I had the necessary discipline, then I still enjoy them, despite the high difficulty.

There is a limit though. When a game feels completely unfair and so ridiculously hard that it's more or less a case of luck, it's no longer any fun to play.

I am suprised Ninja Gaiden Black has not been mentioned.
Normal Mode = Hard mode on other games
      Hard Mode = Very Hard
Very Hard = Very Very Hard
Master Ninja = ARE YOU ****ING CRAZY?

How many games have a difficulty that hard? If there were no save points in levels I would snap the disc.

there is a very fine line between hard and frustrating it really depends on the game

hard games should get easier when you get better at the game

        frustrating games are just unfair

frustrating games i think include dead or alive 4 and mortal kombat 1 2 3 (where the opponent seem to have a unfair advantage)

Also i cannot remember off hand but i am sure some fighting games cheat where they do stuff no human player could do

Ninja gaiden i thought was very hard....but at the time i had played devil may cry 3 and god of war and the controls in them games seemed more instant..........ninja gaiden i had to get use to the delays

I sweat it on Hard Mode on God Hand during certain areas but I still love it. It's all about keepin' it at Lvl Die for the big cash, but sometimes my responses are too slow. >_<

I'm pretty useless at shooters but I can appreciate 'em like Shakey. Oh, and I'm dire at most rhythm games.

Er, there ain't been much recently that's made me weep except this ****er on Extreme Mode!

            Adams Family on the NES....

An absolute nightmare of random traps and pathetic deaths

            *shudders* retro games!

There are too many to mention if we're talking 8-bit and 16-bit generations.

If we're talking more recently, the PS2 port of Max Payne stands out. Without a quick save option, playing it for the first time was galling.

I managed to complete the Mega Drive port of Ghouls & Ghosts when I was a kid. I obviously had much more patience and skill back then.

SF2 SCE on Mega Drive on the hardest difficulty was a swine. I remember being defeated by Bison so many times that I actually cried.
Rayman (original, any format) was a bugger on later levels.
USA version of Devil May Cry 3 was stupidly hard.

Going through Super Ghouls N' Ghosts twice then having to complete it with a very **** 'secret' weapon is ridiculous.

Contra:Shattered Soldier is mega-difficult. 'Learning' it is one thing, and takes a hell of a lot of time, but actually completing it with perfect percentages etc. is mind-crippling.

contra shattered soldier that was annoying

if i remember you could practice the first 4 levels but you couldnt practice the later levels until you had beat them......that seem contradictory to me

                        locomotion on the spectrum.

A game that i found absolutely and unfairly impossible is Airwolf.

I found Turok 2 on the Nintendo 64 an absolute sod to play.

^Me too, especially the hidden-away switches and whatnot. An absolute joyless sod of a game.

Call me sick but I far preferred Turok 3 and Evolution (seriously) to the grim, depressing mess that was Turok 2.

HellFire on the Megadrive was pretty hard shoot'em up. Lots of the old skool games are difficult, compared to today's offerings. Since I don't play games as often as I did I'm finding apparently easy games tough. Viewtiful Joe I still haven't finished! Ikaruga I hadn't finished either.
