Well I love Metroid Prime but I can't help thinking there is quite a bit of truth in this. I also think the Nintendo/Metroid name had quite a bit to do with it. Personally, I think it's still a great game though.

I think DS is referring to Resi 4, not Metroid Prime.

LOL - I don't agree with Gears of War winning Game of the Year either, but at the end of the day it got the most votes.

Very true. My post is half tongue in cheek, half serious.

I don't, for whatever reason, usually hold views in accord with popular opinion but have to agree with both the top 3 GOTG and the top 3 GOTY. The only change I'd make is swap Zelda and GoW's positions but can understand why GoW is the more popular.

Ah you're right. Poor reading on my part.

I was referring to the different versions of the game, not the game itself.

How dare you, the Merchant was brillant!

I'm a huge fan of the Resident Evil series and part of the reason was it's atmosphere. You can say all you want about the series hammy acting and low animation cycles but the notebooks left behind, the music and lonley feeling of a city deserted creates an atmosphere unmatched by any videogame.

Resi 4 changed that completly as it removed all that atmosphere but had an ace up it's sleeve. It's unmatched, immersive, action.

I don't see why RE4 featuring villagers who drop items is too much of a deal. It isn't a naturalistic game and makes no excuses for its continued reliance on traditional videogame staples. The sense of immersion is generated by quality of its progression and adventure, as most classic action games are - moving from place to place and encountering new, exciting events.

I think the only let down for RE4 was the setting. I didn't like the village and the vilagers. It just felt a bit too "same old same". Not that i'm saying RE4 is bad coz i really liked it and thinking back it was one of the most imersive and playable games of last year.

I actually loved the the action in the woods. Where I will agree the action bogs down is in the beginning sections of the castle before you get to some of the more entertaining set-pieces. The story can be viewed as weak, yes, but I really do believe Capcom have reached a stage in the Resident Evil series where their tongues are hanging so far out of their mouths, they're being dragged on the ground (one small example, one of the villagers taking your expensive coat at the beginning of the game, and later in the PS2 version -Ada I think- you end up shooting one of them turned into a zombie who stole it to wear. Great touch).

I feel some of the lines and characters in RE4 hit the level of being so camp that they're classic. In that retrospect you could say the review I wrote for this site was too harsh, because at the time, I was more critical of the story for not taking the art/aesthetic to a more chilling 70s horror-style level.

Where I do agree the game's weakness lie are in the menu system (before you level up, the game needs to allow you to change weapons on-screen so you don't have to keep repeatedly breaking up the action to consolidate ammo). Oh, and in its pacing during the start of its middle period... thankfully in the overall length of the game that's not a great deal of time.

Is RE4 10/10? Not in my opinion, no.

Is it my game of the generation? Nope.

Is it one of the best games of the generation? Without a doubt.

I say we all vote for Resident Evil 4 to feature as the next game game in Replay Appreciate.
