I never buy Platinum / Player's Choice games because I hate the bland silver spines that mess up the all white spines of my PS2 collection and just look bland next to the multicoloured Gamecube spines. The image on the actual disk which is normally just the name on a silver background looks rubbish as well and reminds me a promo copy. I'm such a snob when it comes to these things.

Its not like they get taken in and out every day either. The game usually stays in the drive until i've finished with it. Only exception is PC games, as they need reinstalling when the OS gets reinstalled.

If a game retails at $50, but the original label is out of print and the budget labelled edition is priced at $20, I'd rather pay $100 for an original print. No joke. Or just pirate the game. There's no way I'm buying budget labelled games. A peelable sticker would have been enough. There was no need to butcher the disc and cover art. It's sacrilege.
This topic is hilarious. Not buying games that are cheaper because of the artwork.
I couldn't give two ****s. I'd buy it if it was a good game, even if it just came in a black box with the title printed on it.

This used to bother me very mildly on some level, until I found that an apparently (to the untrained eye) completely random 'jumbled up' game shelf, filed alphabetically by developer (not publisher, and not paying heed to format), looked far more enticing and organic than clinical row upon clinical row of uniform box types. Saturn next to N64, Platinum PSone next to PC DVD or even chunky old Amiga box from the early 90's - whatever.
I find it particularly bizarre that someone would be more concerned about not having the Platinum PSone Final Fantasies than they would having PAL FFs at all. I was much happier when I bought a green 'Player's Choice' flashed NTSC FFVII. That way I get a far superior, 16.7% taller screen image and swifter gameplay, which after all, I will spend 70 - 120 hours looking at rather than the occasional glimpse of the plastic and paper spine.
The art and enjoyment existing mainly as it does in the code of the game, not the mass produced discs, cases and sleeves.Last edited by Ratso; 20-03-2007, 14:45.

Tell you what ****s me off though: I have both PAL Platinum and US Greatest Hits versions of God Of War and the US one has a full colour manual and all (probably the original). In PAL land we get crappy B&W with terrible contrast, so poor that some of the images are not distinguishable.
Costs more too (due to exchange rates). I paid 14.99 GBP for Platinum and 19.99 USD for Greatest Hits.

The PS1 Platinum cases were well designed, just changing the sleeve and the bar at the bottom to a platinum color from the normal black, they weren't too instrusive. However, whoever designed the PS2 and X Box ones needs to be shot, they are as bad as those crappy PC budget title covers, truly shocking.

I just wish they would change it so it looks more like a seal of approval (like a small peelable sticker) rather than 'BUY THIS CHEAPER VERSION NOW!'
