you will need to select HDMI but both composite and HDMI can be left in the machine at the same time

plug the PS3 in via composite, whilst having the HDMI lead in the console and TV ready. Switch on the PS3 on the composite channel, on video select HDMI and choose resolution, switch to HDMI and you should be good to go!

Just tried that and still not working.

I think it is the lead thats the problem - just changed the audio output to HDMI and played some music on the PS3 and thats not working either.

Ive got all my fingers crossed hoping it is just the HDMI and not the TV or console.

try this....

connect via composite, download the new 1.6 update.

turn off the machine, plug in hdmi cable (and unplug composite), make sure the tv is on, then turn the system back on. should detect the HDMI cable automatically as long as the tv is on.

Does PS3 not like Samsung or sumfing ? I got a Sammy and was planning on picking up a machine tomorrow ?

No, it's not that mate, it's just that when the US consoles came out there were a couple of people (myself included) with Sammys that just refused to work through HDMI. My current Samsung LCD is fine through HDMI though.

No idea why, but my wireless keeps disconnecting. COnnecting to a netgear router and it just keeps signing in and out. Wii, 360 and other PCs in house are perfectly fine. Wanna bash on resistance but cant even DL the update

I get that sometimes, its annoying but seems to settle down after a while. You could just use a ethernet cable for the initial set up?

I was refering to the update for online play. Cable isn't even an option, no tv anywhere near the router.

Patch DLed fine on the 3rd try, i'll keep an eye on it.

I've been having similar problems with the PS3 disconnecting from my wireless router.
Still managed to download the 1.6 firmware and Folding@Home OK though.
I haven't been able to sign up to the PS Network yet so no free Casino Royale for me at this rate.
Certainly soured my first impressions of the PS3 today.

when i switched mine on via hdmi

the machine told me that it found a hdmi source and would i like to use it

i clicked yes or X and suddenly i got a message stating i had 1080p goodness
