I never finished Metroid Prime - I died a few times at the last boss but it wasn't so much that, but the repeated journey to the boss that caused me to quit. It actually bothered me less than you might think because I knew it was the end and I had enjoyed the game so much to there that I felt fine about putting it down and moving on. What a great game.

I was reading through this and waiting to see who was the first to mention Bangai-oh!

Wow, that is HARD. Infact, it's probably the hardest last level I can think of in game. Not only does it take you about 5-10 mins to reach the end section (this kind of skill takes a good 50 or so attempts to hone down, the first time you do the level, it takes about 30 mins to get to the end). Then, once you enter the final room and confront the boss, he kills you within 5 seconds: back to the beginning, sucka. Took me hours, days of deditcated practice to break that boss.

Notable mentions must go to Jet Force Gemini and Metroid Prime too, I'm feeling the pain.

Halo is probably the finest textbook answer to how to finish a videogame.

When I did it on single player, I had a big rush considering it was my first time and I did not guide the Warthog around very well. But when I played it on Co-Op with mate (and many more to follow) the experience was twice the rush as the single player.

        Awesome.

Embarassingly, I gave up on the Cuba level in GoldenEye. I just couldn't get past the mini turrets so never saw the end of the game. Not a boss, but it was the same with PGR2. I have all plats except a few cone challenges. The thought of making one mistake and ruining my run just filled me with dread, so I didn't bother in the end and just bought the TVR.

Psi-Ops is how to not end a videogames. The bosses themselves were actaully really well done and not "OMG I WANT TO KILL THIS GAME" hard, but the whole logic of 'well now there are enemies that resist your psi powers, turning it into a run and gun, and the pointless addition of the invisible creatures and mines that you can only see by using a stupid sight ability was just a cheap way of making things different. One of the few games in which you can actually tolerate doing the same thing over and over again cause it's so much damn fun, and they then deliberately change stuff to make it suck.

One of the best ending I had was with Grandia for PSX. One of my friends claimed the boss was too hard to beat at the end and he used a game shark and could barely finsih it. I just played through the game had a decent level (Not Max) and beat the final boss. They almost couldn't believe it. I even had some extra special spells they didn't have. The ending was excellent for the game. I need to buy this so I can relive the journey and adventure of Grandia.

Hmmm other games I played with great endings....

              FF7
              Super Metroid
Contra II ALien Wars ( Nothing beats that huge brain at the end walking around LOL)
Metal Gear Solid PSX ( The Rex freaked me out the first time)

I adored GTA 3, right until they decided on the lazy way to make the last mission difficult, and stole all my weapons off me before making the area inaccessible to heavy-duty vehicles. All the fun of coming up with unconventional solutions replaced with a trudging argument with their crappy targeting system. I never did bother finishing it.

Heh the Bangaio end-boss is great! He takes a while to do, but the satisfaction you get when he finally goes down makes it all worthwhile.

I gave up on Project Zero after my THIRD restart. The game expected me to know I was going to fight two bosses in a row at some point and that I should ration my ammo accordingly.

Project Zero suffered from pre-Resident Evil 4elitis, in that it was a game where you could run out health and be unable to continue - I got stuck on a boss simply because I didn't have the right film/health supplies. RE Zero (lowest point in the main series) also suffered from this and I got stuck on another boss thee. As Dogg Thang mentioned Prime was also one of those games which punished the player too heavily on the bosses... so much so that I've not started Echoes simply due to the frustration I had on the final boss.

I just scanned this but I was looking for mention of two things in particular:

The President's Run in Driver - it was a f*&king joke - the police cars hit you so hard you actually got knocked OFF THE MAP i.e. outside the playable areas of the game. I did eventually do this by switching down to easy difficulty, then the only trouble I had was with 2 cop cars heading to intercept me at a junction. I just braked ever so slightly, they hit each other, and I kept going.

2nd - Bangai-o. Hardest effing boss in videogame history. Now this one time, I managed to get into a sequence of timing where my missiles were countering his regularly, and I had him down to about a 5th health remaining before I lost the rhythm and died. When I did actually beat him, it was a complete fluke. You know that platform he starts on? I was on one side of it, he was at the other, and he was trying to come at me directly through it. I grabbed the opportunity and killed the mofo. I couldn't count how long or how many attempts that took.

Yup. The President's Run was a complete bitch.

Another one, (although the end level/end sequence were great) is Beyond Good & Evil where the controls reverse themselves on the final boss and it degenerates into a trial and error exercise. GTA III also included a bitch of a final mission if I remember correctly (having to infiltrate a heavily fortified dam on Shoreside Vale).

Project Altered Beast has one boss I just can't get past - that woman at the end who morphs into all these different forms. I can beat the first three modes easliy, but the fourth one where she sprouts wings and fills the room with these huge tornadoes gets me every time. There's loads of stuff to unlock in the game, and I really want to finish it, but that boss stops me in my tracks every time.

BG&E wasn't that hard, I killed that boss on my first try. I thought the idea of reversing the controls was a brilliant one -- can't think of a better way to represent gameplay-wise Jade's gradual loss of control over herself.

Driver was a bitch, though. Took me about 10 tries to get it right -- the trick, if I recall, is to do it without ever touching the brakes.

Psi-Ops's final level is almost a textbook example of how to make the player switch off his console. Shame, as the rest of the game is excellent (sadistic player + physics engine + telekinesis = win! ^.^)

I'm surprised no one mentioned Final Fantasy 8 yet. As you enter the last castle, the retard in charge of game design feels a spark of un-brilliance and decides that taking away all of your commands except "attack", forcing you to fight mini-bosses to get them back (one by one, and did I mention that "save" is taken away too?) is an awesome, one-one-one idea.
After a couple tries, I realized that I'd have to spent a few hours leveling (which already rates Very Bad in my book, especially since combat in FF8 is both extremely dull and freaking slow -- not to mention the 10-minute Track n' Field-style summons) before attempting that... And at that point I found out that I couldn't go back. See, I should have known all by myself that I had to level up like **** beforehand!
I switched off the console, put the game back in its box and never touched it again.

Vagrant Story is the only game where I've arrived at a stalemate - the end boss couldn't hurt me but nor could I damage him.

I had to go back to an earlier save, change weapon and build up its stats before I could win.
