Don't know where to find EU sales figures, but they sold 360k units in the US last month - don't know how that compares to previous, but it seems like a lot to me, especially given the stock situation...

For me, this weekend really highlighted how vital Wii Sports is for Wii’s success... My girlfriend and i had quite a few guests this weekend (why do people come round when you're ill?) All aged between 25-35, most women but a few guys too… some had little ones... and every single one was completely taken in by Wii Sports' appeal.

Many had never played a game in their lives... but the moment they saw it in action they were instantly intrigued, and then, the moment they played it for themselves they couldn’t stop smiling, laughing and having a blast.

iloveannie is spot on here… [taken from a previous post]

It is active, competitive, fun and very social. It's more like cards or dominoes, pool and darts. Monopoly even! Swingball in the garden, that kind of thing. It's not a video game although it uses the very technology that has become synonymous with a largely insular pastime.
Alternatively, when I went to show them Zelda they lost interest almost immediately. Obviously I’m keen to share my passion for videogames, especially such a beautiful series as Zelda, but I wholeheartedly appreciate epic videogames – or those that fit in the action/FPS/RPG/Platform etc etc genres – have limited appeal. They seemingly appear too complex, too uninvolved, too deeply surrounded by the undeniable stigma that surrounds videogames… But the wii… or more specially, titles like Wii Sports - has unlimited appeal.

I think it is wonderful. I can still play the games I love on Xbox, Playstation, cube and whatnot – but im also able to share my passion with those who would otherwise be uninterested if not for the wii. How is that a bad thing? It’s all good.

I couldn't believe my eyes when someone broke out their Wii at a barbeque this weekend. The guests were mostly postmen and their wives, the sort of people you'd expect to see proping up the bar of the local Working Men's Club. I know for a fact they all think games are silly. Put oh how they loved Wii Sports! We had a pretty good game of Tiger Woods too that ran late into the night. One convert summed it up pretty well when it said the atmosphere was like a good game of darts

As I was saying, the Wii's appeal for the new market is in the fact that it is not a video game. You may aswell have showed them a stamp collection or hiking photos on a projector.

This is a new direction and many of us are being utter dinosaurs in our understanding and acceptance. What are Wii owners doing? Why ask on a video game enthusiasts website?

Indeed buddy... That is my point, i knew they wouldn't be interested, but i was intrigued to see their reactions

I know few cases where Wii non-gamer did actually start to play Zelda and got hooked. The challenge with Wii is to create suitable "entry drugs", and Zelda isn't probably most suitable game for that job. New Super Mario Bros did job much better on DS, mostly because it is relatively simple game.

                Maybe in the West.
Brain Training, English training etc has opened the DS up to a completely new demographic shifting millions of units allowing Nintendo to remain profitable.
I'm guessing this strategy is one that was at the forefront of the Wii design philosophy.

Like I said on page 9, according to Nintendo's own statistics, 81 percent of japanese Brain Training buyers joined Club Nintendo, and over 60 percent of them bought either NSMB or Mario Kart DS as their second game. Rest were divided with other, slightly less popular titles such as Tetris, Animal Crossing, Big Brain Academy, and Pokemon. I just meant that NSMB was easily approachable title for non-gamers, and after NSMB, they bought even more "serious" games. Twilight Princess can't take similar role, because it is way too complex.

Should have shown them Excite Truck.

The Wii is apparently set to overtake the 360 in UK installed base by end of October, should current sales patterns continue:

The resource for people who make and sell games.

I would not have put money on this two years ago...

Doesnt surprise me to be honest, pretty much everyone i've talked to has one or wants one... I've had a few 'Wii Weekends' recently, and pretty much everyone has called me a couple days later expressing their excitment of their new Wii purchase

Just think what it will be like when the 'true' games start hitting the shelves... and then Wii Fit next year will, of course.

And 360 worldwide this month. In USA it will take more than year before Wii can even attempt to pass X360's sales.

In fairness, it'd be passing the 360 much sooner if there weren't still shortages.

I've noticed that all the shops near me are advertising their Wii stock (places like Woolworths - I live in a small town). Plus I keep seeing them for sale on sites like game.co.uk and stopped seeing stock alerts, so I'm assuming that supply is at least a little better now(?)

I want to get one soon, but I'm worried Retro's going to muck up Prime 3 after the slightly less-than-positive feature in EDGE this month. Plus there's the hassle of importing.

Yeah, it is little better, but it is also obvious that Nintendo is already stockpiling Wii's for holidays. My personal estimation is around 400 000 units per month. After all, it would be terrible PR-disaster if there wouldn't be enough Wiis to cover most of the demand during christmas.
