I have said it many times before, and I say it again.... marketing and your console's image is far more important than actual games, because when you reach market leader position good games will come.

If first year's games would be any kind indication about who is going to win, then PS2 would have failed miserably, and we would be currently playing with SEGA Dreamcast 2. Sony tarnished their imago by being idiots, and by seriously overestimating how much masses are willing to pay for PS3. Damage that this has caused for console's imago can't be repaired even after price drop.

That's true. There are several titles on the PS3 radar that help it float along. Plus if that rumour of PS3 version of PES7 being over 18GB of stuff (?) (absolutely not confirmed by Konami), could be a big plus for the system in PAL land.

Welcome to the forum cancer. I'm hoping it'll improve once we're over the first year hurdle (if we count 2007 as the start of the generation with all three contenders being in the ring).

I agree with elkatas on the criticism of Sony's image handling. They got it so very badly wrong between E3 2005 and the end of 2006.

They've wised up slightly since GDC... well, that is if you disclude the Kotaku and God of War 2 promotion party incidents. I'm sure there are others.

What's important to my mind is that the market is (at least) able to support both the Wii and a HD-orientated system. That can either be the 360 or PS3.

We need the contrast... if the market goes off completely in the direction of the Wii and we end up being reset five years technically, then we can say goodbye to the more of the likes of GTAIV, Mass Effect etc in the immediate future. If it goes off with the PS3 and 360, well the market becomes too similar - it's like choosing between Labour and Conservative.

The punchline here is that we might be facing terrible crisis without Wii, because PS3 and X360 wouldn't be selling more better without it . There is over 30 high-budget, high-profile games coming out before end of year, and there isn't simply enough installed user base to guarantee that even 10 of them will break even*. Someone is going to get hurt this christmas, and badly.

And in other news, bear that rides with motorbike:

            * Statistically speaking, most users buy one or two games during holidays. This year Grand Theft Auto IV will be the title that most people will buy.

You don't have to apparently. Like when you throw a new born baby in water it'll swim.. toss a bear at a bike and Bob's your uncle. Sorry for going OT

I do think they have got it horribly, horribly wrong previously!!

I'd disagree about the whole goat thing as that was really blown out of proportion by one paper and then the web just ran with it without bothering to look into what actually happened...as often happens on the web unfortunately.

The main problem Sony have is David Karraker!!! That man really has no right to be in charge of a pen and paper let alone corporate comms!! He is reactionary, narrow minded and just not that bright. The whole Kotaku thing was down to him and it seems that all the other mistakes originated in his tiny little brain also.

I think as a plus for Sony is that, more than the other two they really do seem to be listening to their customers and trying to supply what they are looking for now.

I have to admit that what Nintendo has done is very worrying to me. The devs got so excited about the cheapness of production at first but they now seem to be talking about how that fact is hurting their sales so much due to a flooded market of incredibly weak games. It can't possibly be seen as healthy that people are selling them within a couple of weeks of buying them?

It seems to have pretty much been universally agreed by many throughout the industry that all three will be very close at the end and that can only benefit us as consumers!

I really think that people can read far too much into charts and sales anyway...

For pete's sake, sales charts show how utterly ridiculous and stupid that claim is. Wii's 3rd party games are selling very well, and sales haven't slowed a bit since last December. If there would be such wave of negativity, neither console nor its games would sell so well as they do.
