    Interesting news from Nintendo today:

NINTENDO'S WIIWARE PAVES THE WAY FOR FRESH GAMES, COOL CONSUMER EXPERIENCES

Nintendo Sets a New Paradigm: One Game Can Still Make a Difference

SANTA MONICA, Calif., June 27, 2007 ? The search for the next ingeniously ground-breaking video game has begun. At a private developers conference this week, Nintendo announced the introduction of WiiWare?, a game-creation service that will allow developers large and small to create new downloadable video game content for sale by Nintendo through the Wii Shop Channel of the hot Wii? home video game system. WiiWare paves the way for smaller, more creative games to make their way to the public at lower prices, without any inventory risk to developers. The first WiiWare content will launch in early 2008.
"Independent developers armed with small budgets and big ideas will be able to get their original games into the marketplace to see if we can find the next smash hit," says Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "WiiWare brings new levels of creativity and value to the ever-growing population of Wii owners."
The possibilities for WiiWare are limited only by the imaginations of developers. WiiWare provides game creators a simple method by which they can get their games to the public. This approach, combined with the remarkable motion controls of the Wii Remote? and Nunchuk?, will give birth to fresh takes on established genres, as well as original ideas that currently exist only in developers' minds. The reduced barriers to development provide developers the freedom to create and an inexpensive, clearly defined path to reach consumers who will ultimately determine which game will become the Next Big Thing.
WiiWare will be posted on the Wii Shop Channel. As with current Wii Shop Channel offerings, users will redeem Wii Points? to download content. It will support a variety of pricing options. Details about that and upcoming projects will be announced at a later date. For more information about Wii, visit Wii.com.

The big companies should save costs using existing engines and do the right thing.

Megadrive - Sonic the Hedgehog 4, Snes - Donkey Kong Country 4 etc

    God i'd love that.

Don't even put the idea of Sonic 4 in my head.
Sonic 3 + knuckles is one of my top 3 fave games ever.

I am peeved that it's taken them this long to sort it out and we still won't see titles till 2008. I hope Nintendo make some games by this method too.

So is this just essentially what Microsoft have already done.

Sounds like it, yeah, but taking the Wii's userface into consideration I won't be surprised if it produces some truly fresh and innovative stuff.

Yeah, pretty much except for one significant difference that wasn't said in the press release. Unlike its competitors, Nintendo won't buy the software from the developers. Instead it just works as middleman who sets the prices, and distributes profits. It is developers job to get ESRB rating, debug game to meet excepted standards, and decide when game will be released.

            This info came from Gamasutra.

Yeah, please don't give me anything to think about that's not going to happen. T T. DKC4 would be **** anyway if it didn't have Dave Wise + his chums doing the music.

Is this for proper studios only, or not? The press release reads as if it is, but the BBC implies that anyone can do it

I guess it will be the same as MS where anyone can buy access to the tools and such but unless you actually have some programming knowledge you wont be able to use it at all.

I wasn't sure initially, my first thoughts were maybe Nintendo were released some sort of game-making software that would be relatively easy for 'normal' members of the public to use.

It seems, however, that isn't the case, which seems like a bit of a missed opportunity.

I remember almost being in awe of the hive levels. DKC2 was definately the peak, loved DKC3 but it reused stuff too much.

Would at least be nice if Nintendo would finish up some of the games it abandoned like Starfox 2, F Zero 2, was it Buggie Boogie on the N64? All that stuff they announced, nearly finished then forgot.
