There's a pretty decent top down shooter as well.

Dammit the name escapes me. - Hudson's top down Parodius type thing.

    Aha! - Star Parodier

Noooooo how can you say that.

The PCE version of rainbow islands is the best version available on ANY home console. for starters its the only version that has all 10 islands and the true arcade ending. The megadrive version was truely crap.

Plus the PCE version has a cool save feature so you can select islands you have already completed and replay them. I can fully recommend the pce version if you can find a copy as its well worth getting.
There's something about it that's not quite right (apologies for sounding wishy washy). Perhaps it's because I've been playing it on the Saturn mostly, but I think that the PCE version has a bit of a responsiveness issue- when you create a rainbow, there's a very slight pause from the moment that you press the button to the rainbow actually being generated. Sometime this can cause frustration because you end up missing the rainbow that you've just created and end up falling down. Since creating rainbows is the focal point of the game - this for me really brings it down. Neither the NES, Megadrive, Saturn/PSone versions suffer from this.

Agreed though, it is nice to have a copy - it's a bit of a shi#ty thing to do but I only keep mine because it's rare (worth about ?50plus)

Theres a Kaze Kiri on Ebay at the moment

Pomping World, Motoroader II and R-Type Complete are worthwhile PCE CD games. Also Fighting Street (Street Fighter 1) is worth looking at just for a laugh!

What is Kaze Kiri all about then?

I saw Fighting Street when it came out on pce cd, and then again at Game On. I've never been impressed with it at all.

I bought Pomping World and Minsweeper (cheap!) just over a week ago, I'll probably pick up Wonder Boy today, then start hunting for decently priced Star Parodia, Darius, Rainbow Islands and Dracula X after that.

Then theres Gradius 2, Ys I & II, Puyo Puyo, Cotton, Gates of Thunder, maybe Snatcher and Golden Axe.

Anyone know if Golden Axe is any good?

How much of a pain is the language barrier in Snatcher? Heard good things about this game, but never seen it.

Anyone read the Edge article? I'm not sure I agree about the cd-rom2 being the most desirable, I would have thought that was a good nick Duo-R or RX. It is the most funky though

I'm slightly irritated they didn't try and put together a hardware price guide to summarise all the different bits and pieces available. Listing CD games separately would have helped me here too

Also suprised at some of the more popular games they missed out, the Bomberman games, Devil/Alien Crush/Crash, PC Kid, Parodius, Liquid Kids, Don Doko Don etc. in favour of shooters and obscure but average sounding games.

Many of the pictures were really poor and clearly nicked from the web too, including that publicity shot of the white pc engine that has been around for ever.

As with most games it's severely dated by todays standards but if you originally played the first Street Fighter (Which is what it is) you'll realise what a cool conversion Fighting Street really was...

On top of that it had a fricking cool arranged soundtrack all on CD too!

Indeed it's one of those games. Although one day I'll get around to changing it for something else.

I played Street Fighter back in the day on one of those rare cabs with two pressure sensitive pads. They had one at Drayton Manor.

The game has never really impressed me at all...

Never played it on PCE, but I've got the English language MegaCD version and I'd hazard a guess that it'll be impossible to play through. Well, maybe not impossible, but not much fun. It's a bit like an old text adventure RPG (you know, "Go west. Go north. Pick up hammer. Go North. Use hammer on chicken.") with anime visuals, and navigation of the game world is all done through selecting actions from multiple choice lists.

Absolutely bloody awesome game when playing it in your own language, mind - cyberpunkbladerunnerinvasionofthebodysnatchersterm inatortastic.

No mate, it is total crap. The guys that converted it got a bung from Sega to make sure it was lame.

I got my info from Edge this month.

yeah... read that. thinking about it, I'm sure I would have heard something about pce cd Golden Axe if it was any good.

                                shame.
