The DS version just felt `wrong` to me. Couldn't quite put my finger on why but I think Ouenben is near the mark - it felt like it was low on action and high in puzzles. Also it just didn't fit with what I was expecting and felt hampered by the DS touch control (not often that happens).
I got the feeling that Red Hot Rumble would have been truer to the series but I never got around to picking that up (that said I've got a hankering for some Henshin-a-go-go after reading this thread and it can be picked up for next to nothing now...)
I don't usually take part in Re: play appreciate threads but VJ might just be the game to change that
As for the second game, if you liked the first there isn't much to fall out with. But 2 is worth buying for the brilliant 36 Chambers of Heroness mode alone. It's a real test of absolute VJ skill
And as a shameless plug, NTSC-uk has a review up of 1,2 and the DS game up if you want some opinion on them
