    VD-W2 Wii VGA cable

Stuck it in here, as I thought it'd be more use?

    New Wii product released.

Looks like a Component-to-VGA transcoder, but in a cable.
Very nice though, no need for external power.

Looks quite useful, though I take it from what shakey just said it?s not proper VGA.

No it's not, but it will still look very nice, you likely won't be able to tell.

It also won't work with the 3 or 4 Wii games that lack 480p, and you'll have to blindly enable 480p on supporting GC games (though it does appear to have a connection to a TV for times when you can't use Progressive).

Looks better than the VD Component to VGA I used for my Wii on my monitor (although that's just a slight judgement from those pictures).

Anyone any idea what happened to that Wii USB cable which would output to a laptop/pc monitor via USB?

That just did 480i afaik, so basically you're better off getting a TV card.

Btw if someone is buying this cable, please please please post a review ^^.

I don't understand why Nintendo didn't include a VGA output on the Wii. It was there on the Cube when most people still used CRT TV's and now when most have moved on to LCD and plasmas, they remove it? It's illogical.

It wasn't really on the Cube though, the Cube had a Digital Out which output YCbCr (Digital Component, basically).
The Cube Component cables had an Analogue-to-Digital converter which converted it into YPbPr (Analogue Component) for our TV's.
It just so happened this converter could be modded to output RGB (for Scart and VGA).

Nintendo are a bit stingy with their outputs though. Removing Scart and S-Video from the NTSC and PAL Wii's respectively, and no optical (this was standard on the PS2 ffs).

Ahh, I always thought the Cube included a true VGA output. My mistake.

Well, it was still "true" VGA. It's just that the DA chip was in the cable, not the machine itself and was very versatile.

'cept the actual source is still YCbCr (though I think it renders at YUV anyway, which is the same thing? Not sure).

I do have the GC VGA cable (no longer used though), and the picture was very good.

                        Was it better than component?

About the same. VGA isn't necessarily better in terms of image quality, it's just a different type of signal which some screens may prefer/or vice versa.

Don't forget Blu-Ray/HD-DVD movies are YCbCr (Digital Component).

Most TVs will bugger up a VGA signal less since they assume this is coming from a computer. But the biggest problem with the Wii's output is that so many games use the Flicker Filter in the Wii hardware itself. This cable won't be able to do undo that damage.

In fairness, that's the correct way of handling it, and works great for DC too.

(I do remember my old LG let you choose between PC and TV colourspace for VGA, DVI and HDMI).
