Seriously, there's loads of nice stuff that gets the PAL treatment but won't be released in the US.
PS2 might be the first japanese console where it's equally important to be able to play games from US and PAL territories.
If you only have a US console, you're bound to miss bucket loads of excellent titles.
I only like games developed by Japanese developers, but with English language options, so a US console is perfect for me. A US console is the best option in the main - this is the first Japanese title I've come across that didn't come out in the US but did get an English translation. To me a chipped console is a piracy machine. It takes a will of iron to own one and not ever play a 'backup'. I'll be shocked if owning out-of-region consoles has become a minority pursuit on a site with NTSC in its title.

But if there are many more games like GDF that does somewhat muddy the waters. I've no wish to play PAL games all the same. I mostly only play RPGs so its no great loss. My interest in this is mainly due to its being so favourably reviewed on Consolevania a couple of years ago.

I always thought it's about the games and not about the hardware. I also thought that NTSC meant all imports, US and japanese ones. Another reson I like this forum is that I never had the feeling that PAL titles are ignored either, there's no elitist import snobbery going on here as far as I can tell.

If you're only playing RPGs, a US machine is a reasonable solution.. sry, I thought you're referring to all games and not just a particular genre.

It's a great title that seems to speak a universal gaming language. To me, it doesn't feel distinctly Japanese or Western. It does distinctly feel like a videogame, however. A very pure and enjoyable one, not constrained by logic or convention.

Get the japanese version and run it off a PAL ps2 harddrive if you can't import a machine. Problem solved.

          Right on.

It's up there with 2D Mario and Pro Evo for me, in terms of pure gameplay content at least. It looks like chunder 90% of the time, yet just occasionally it will create a jaw dropping moment that trumps most other games in wowzer factor. LIke the giant centipede or the second mothership appearing after a flash in the sky. Centipede juggling is also rad.

Probably my game of the year thus far.

Wasn't GDF2 released as Monster Attack in the US anyway? That could be a solution to Taurine's problems.

Don't know how much this helps:

Monster Attack is Earth Defence Force 1 in Japan.

Global Defence Force is Earth Defence Force 2 in Japan.

Earth Defence Force 2017 is Earth Defence Force 3 in Japan.

                Yeah basically

The Chikyuu Boueigun 1 (Jap) = Monster Attack (UK)

The Chikyuu Boueigun 2 (Jap) = Global Defence Force (UK)

                The Chikyuu Boueigun 3 (Jap) = Earth Defens(c)e Force 2017 (US/UK)

I don't know if the first two were even released in the US.
                This:

suggests not, although maybe an Earth Defense Force 2 made it to the US. That needs clarification.

Blessed are we PAL gamers to have conversions of the first two, even if it means 50hz skankyness.

Only Earth Defence Force 2017 has been released in the US.
There are no US versions of either Monster Attack nor Global Defence Force.

Btw we're still stuck at the last two missions on Inferno, anyoe suggestions on how to tackle them?

I wish I had a lot of time for games these days, but with work/relationship commitments, it's kinda difficult and I know I'll only get the odd weekend to relax and play games. Then I'd definitely give this another shot. May just pick up the PAL version as I saw a copy in town for like, ?6 new.

Fantastic game, only ruined by the fact that my memory card died on me after about 60 hours of playing this.

may also have someone to play it co-op with as my brother is still interested in 'Attack of the alien infested insects'

One of the highlights of the game for me

                      you are?

Like what? besides the first two games in this series i mean

I'm pretty sure there are far more quality titles that get released in the US and not the UK than vice versa to be honest.

Too many things to name here, but mainly shmups (Dragon Blaze, 1945, Homura), nearly every notable Simple Series release, racing games (Road Rage 3 aka Touge 3, Tokyo Road Race aka Battle Gear 2) and other stuff like Gregory Horror Show, Michigan, Kengo 3, Maken Shao, Panzer Front, Detonator, .. I'm not saying that europe's getting better games than the US when we take every localization into account, I'm just saying that you're missing out on a few interesting titles.

I also have less and less time to spent on games, but the few hours on the weekend belong to GDF.
Loosing a 60+ hours save hurts big time I know, but I'd still recommened playing through it again in Co-Op, cause that's the same I did after completing it in single player and it wasn't boring at all cause it was an entirely different (and unimaginably more satisfying) experience.

This thing is made for Co-Op.

I said quality games!!! (ok gregory's horror show is, but besides that the rest arent even worth their budget prices really)

As for shmups, all the best shmups seem to get released in the US anyway and dont usualy have loads of stuff removed from them like crappy pal releases either.

Plus if you have a region free machine surely youd rather get the jap versions of those games anyway? seeing as most of the PAL versions run at 50hz and thats a big no no for shmups really.

Of course you're entitled to your own opinion and no, many PAL shmups have a 60Hz option and do I agree that a region free machine is the best way to go ^_-

                            Now, back on topic pls.

tbh, if people miss out on TCB2/EDF2/GDF because they've got an hangup about 50hz/60hz, then it's their loss. The framerate sucks anyway, and whining about black borders is soon forgotten once you get into the game. It's like moaning that the supermodel you're about to hump doesn't have big enough wazzers. Deal with it and get on with enjoying the whole experience.

Hey chaps, I was playing the 360 version and thinking that i missed fly-girl, so loaded up Chikyū Bōeigun 2, but had forgotten what all the weapons do. Knowing that it got a UK release, i looked on Play.com and saw Global Defence Force Tactics:
