    Global Defence Force PS2

You can keep your high-def texturing, your HDR lighting, your realistic cloth effects and your emergent squad AI. After experiencing the thrills in store here, who wouldn't rather have a city full of ants and an army's worth of firepower? If you're tired of marketing bluster and Hollywood sheen, if you've forgotten the last time a game made you want to hug the people behind it, maybe you should call the GDF.

After the price went pretty high on amazon due to shortage the game seems to be widely available again and I guess it's about time that the PAL version gets its own thread.

So is anyone playing it? I'm currently 84hours in with only the last two missions on Inferno left (but those two are a nightmare). 134 weapons and 3k armor for the marine and 152 and 2k armor for Palewing so far. I'm playing with a mate in Co-Op mind you, I guess single player is nearly impossible, though I might try someday just out of curiosity.

So pls feel free to share your GDF related experiences and of course there's also room for discussing related games like the predecessor (Monster Attack) or GDF Tactics.

    From gamestyle:

"...excellent pacing, with bigger, faster, stronger monsters delivered at the perfect time to provide a "you gotta be kidding me" moment..."

This happened in GDF far more than EDF2017. The 360 iteration had far too much repetition.

That centipede thing is still one of my favourite gaming moments ever, as well as the mega-ants, mega-spiders, super godzilla and the massive T-shaped ufo.

Graphically, the imagination that has gone into the set pieces pisses all over most next gen games. The first time a black hole appears, then the mothership 'unfolds' above the whole city is amazing. So too is the first moment fireballs hurtle down from the sky, then war of the worlds walkers rise up from where they landed. It's awe-inspiring.

No ps2, is EDF2017 on the 360 as good/worth it?

Not as good but still worth it. If you haven't played EDF2, then EDF2017 will be superb.

I hate to please sony fan boys (if there are any left), but the PS2 is one of the best consoles for sheer quality of games output ever. Everyone should have one.

                    Nope, americans aren't as lucky.

But why want one? I assume if you're able to play Imports, you already have either a modchip or a Swap Set (and if not, they can be gotten for under 20 quids on fleabay), so just tell your chip to play in NTSC mode or patch the game to NTSC if you're desperate for full-screen 60Hz.

50Hz is also easier, which isn't bad seeing as the game is one of the hardest things I've played in quite some time -_^

so the PAL version is 50hz only then?

I always anjoy flying right above the walkers as Pale Wing and ragging them with that Rapier 3 weapon. It's mega powerful. I was also fortunate enough to get the longrange sniper laser that fires a continuous beam from an early hard level. Playing through on easy, it hammers pretty much anything. It's superb moving it slowly along the undersurface of the mothership; it cuts off the turrets like a scapel

Or you might play imported games on an imported console?

And miss out all the PAL stuff? What a bad idea..
Seriously, there's loads of nice stuff that gets the PAL treatment but won't be released in the US.
PS2 might be the first japanese console where it's equally important to be able to play games from US and PAL territories.
If you only have a US console, you're bound to miss bucket loads of excellent titles.

                              @prinnysquad:
Yeah, the Rapier is unstoppable ^_-
I'm using the newest version in nearly every mission, this thing fries Godzillas in no time.
It's also excellent against all sorts of ants (as it stuns them) and therefore useful for hording armor upgrades (got my Palewing 400 health in 3 hours yesterday).

Never really found the laser snipers that useful though.. the last ones I tested just didn't deal enough damage anymore, maybe I should give them another chance? I've found that Palewing kicks major ass up-close, but all her long-range stuff seems inferior to the Marine's Snipes and Launchers (which makes sense as Palewing's more agile..
except if you place him on top of her and give him a ride ).
