    Best current games magazine?

I haven't read games magazines for ages. The last time I did with any regularity was about 1998. I was wondering what the best games mags were at the moment.

Now I don't mean the demo disc obsessed complete toss of Official Playstation Magazine, I mean an enthusiastic but not mechanical and style over substance magazine like Edge, or one who've dropped down to lowest common denominator like CVG.

I'd like one that's interesting and covers imports with enthusiasm and intelligence. Basically I just want MAXIMUM back... and/or the moon on a stick.

(Note: MAXIMUM for those who don't recall was a 7 issue monthly magazine circa 1995 that devoted huge amounts of pages to a small amount of games it deemed good enough to feaure. It was possibly the best magazine ever done by EMAP)

Games TM and (bless them) Edge are probably the best at the moment.

Single format I like Cube (they have some nice preview discs on the front).

Don't read any XB or PS2 only mags.

Yeah Games TM and Edge are the only ones I buy. Only buy single format mags if they have something on the cover disks I wish to sample.

Edge is still good, just. But I must say, OXM has some intersting game coverage. Maybe its due to the system having fewer games coming out than any other console, but it never fails to show me pics of games I dont know about!

(no, I dont pay for it, im not stupid)

I used to buy a wide variety of gaming mags but haven't picked one up in about a year, I just don't feel as though I fit to any of their demographics anymore. As you said, it's either the cold, mechanical style of Edge or the peurile ravings of CVG or PSW, those that do place themselves as 'inbetweens' often get their facts wrong and still try to appeal to the lower denominator as they think this assures them at least some sales.

I do miss paging through a magazine, nothing beats sitting comfortably and reading from paper in natural light. I get all my news from the Internet now, yet hate reading from a screen and being unable to take the news with me to read somewhere later, currently though this seems to be the lesser of two evils.

iPAQs are pretty good for this sort of thing. Nice for reading HTML, and there are loads of ebooks for the reader application too. I don't do paper books anymore. So much easier to turn the page by rocking a switch.

Oh, and all the old lucasfilm adventure games run on it too. Sam and Max on the move.

MAXIMUM, now that was how games mag should be, i have all seven issues and have been toying with the idea to scan them all in for website. I loved there huge features on NeoGeo games and the likes of VF2 and Tekken2.

I think my favorite or all time was PC Accelerator. Blisteringly funny, very insightful, and still informative ta boot.

My current favorites are Play and Xbox Nation. Both are passionate about gaming and a delight to read. EGM is okay as a backup read, and Game Informer is just right ****. Can't stand that bloody rag of a magazine.

GamesTM is definatly the best. Its huge, well written, interesting to read, not aimed at horny 14 year olds, has a brilliant retro section and has the edge on edge

as for the worst dont ever go near the official ps2 mag with a 6 foot barge pole!!! its rude, poorly written, out of date, they review porn films to look cool and it really doesnt work, every review they write features bribes and barely mentions the actual game, their demo disc is ****e and it costs ?6 an issue!!!! future publishing deserve to rot in hell for letting this heap of crap out the door. I cannot wait for the day when the plug gets pulled on this and all their staff are made redundant *hehehehe*

Edge are the best, but I do like GamesTM a lot too. I think GTM will be the strongest magazine when they get some more experience, and greater focus on what they stand for.

It's also nice that we have a couple of the magazine staff posting on these forums

note: Super Play had to be the best mag ever. and no mag has even come close to being as good IMO. bring the guys back to do an aniversary issue for all things nintendo. rant rant rant,,,,,,

I second Super Play as the best magazine ever .

I have the entire collection except the first three issues up in my loft somewhere. I really should dig them out and re read some of them!

The best magazines are Edge in 1994, Maximum and superplay....no wait urrr

there are no "good" magazines and the edge has been lost because we all now find out info from the web. Edge lost it a good while ago and much as I try to love Games TM I just can't.
