Yup you have to phone the service number and speak to someone.
They say it takes 30 days or so. I removed mine just befor christmas but its still there.

you could use a passcode on your gamer tag, instead.

you can do it online too as I found out this week, if you login to hotmail and check your profile, there is an accounts section which holds your creditcard details used on xbox live, along with the functionality to remove them.

I've just looked at my billing and membership section via login.live.com (billing.microsoft.com) and whilst there are options to 'Edit your payment method' or add a new Credit Card but I couldn't find a remove button (The Card Type, and Number are editable).

          What did I miss?

You can cease payment on the card, but you can never remove it complete. It is permanently associated to the account (along with any other cards you add).

I went to my hotmail accounts summary then clicked on billing information. Then under "payment type" i clicked my cards details, and there was a button to remove the card. I have a feeling this won't appear if you have a subscription attached to your card, you would need to cancel the subscription first. But it worked a charm removing the details from my xbox360.

Odd I've never used my CC for the Live subscription - used scratch cards twice, just an occasional Microsoft Points purchase. I can't say it bothers me too much in that it's quite convenient to be able to purchase points that way, however I cartainly don't have a remove button.

You need to phone up to do it. With a live subscription Even if you cancel the card, they will still bill it.

I would advise you buy the points from another source rather than giving your credit card number to Microscrew

This happened to me. The card on my account had expired and I wasn't going to renew my live sub as I barely use it. I thought Microsoft would probably warn me and tell me to update my card details at it had expired 11 months ago but they didn't.
Then, my Visa statement arrived and M$ had taken £40 off me!!

How are they allowed to do this? They must've tried to charge my card, realised it had expired and guessed new expiry date so that the purchase would go through. I'm not certain about card laws, but I'm sure what they did was illegal. They basically charged my card without my consent.

For this reason, I want to remove the card from the account. I have a Maestro and a Master Card on the same account too and I don't want M$ to use them when they see fit. All I can do is add another card. I can't remove any of them.

^ Same thing happened to a friend of mine.

I just don't understand how they get away with it? Their system must automatically be trying new combos inorder to get the new expiry date.

Its already a highly dubious business practice (auto-renewal), with these sorts of tactics, its downright unscrupulous.

Barclay card explained to me that it is because you've entered into an agreement and haven't notified Microsoft of it being terminated - hence they bill you.

Its really not cricket though chaps.

Guys, could someone give me some help here:

I have a Gold account which I originally funded with my credit card which has since expired so when the year sub ran out in January, I used a 12 month card to update it but it wouldn't allow me to update my CC details to add MS points etc.

Logged on today to get Trigger Heart and it's telling me my account has been suspended (it must be trying to charge my old credit card) and that I can update this on the "My Account" part of Live. However, I can't get signed into live as it keeps kicking me out.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is driving me mad atm.

Have you tried doing it via xbox.com?
