I reckon Striders friend was done over. If I was a newbie to the console scene and didn`t know idea about stepdowns and tv signals, then I would be angry.
When I first started out, the shops always went on about stepdowns before you purchased and the need for RGB scart etc...
The shop in Bournemouth probably have a pile of unsold Import machines and want to offload them. The price isn`t bad, but they should have the decency to fill customers in on facts of import hardware.
The only bad Pal machine is the PS2. Lets hope 60hz is included as standard for no3.

I think it's case of poor customer service.
I mean, when i was considering buying my GC, i knew about the NTSC/Pal thing, (i had a jap saturn)! And i thought i knew what the crack is. So i went to ChipShop2000 in liverpool and enquired about US or modded PAL GC's(spot my error), he asked me, before going any further, he said: "Are you clued up on import GC's?"
To which i replied confidently "Well yeah"
But to be on the safe side he questioned my knowledge.
CS2K "Well, you know we can't mod a PAL cube to play US or Jap games?"
Me: "Errr, no actually, i didn't"
CS2K "Right, well, we can mod a US cube to play Jap games or visa versa. If you wanted, it depends if you still wanted to play Pal games? And if you did want a NTSC GC you know about the need for step-down convertor? You wouldn't believe how many people we get coming in with fried chips!"
So from the off this guy made sure i knew what i was getting into and what the pro's and cons where in what i was considering to purchase. Which I consider to be good customer service, and is what your mate should've got.
Even though his prices are well expensive!
