IMO All Nintendo games have great music and one worth a mention is F-ZERO X on N64 - Guitars squeeling like stuck pigs !

Forgetting all the modern day music and orchestral scores and easy tracking and arrangement software available today, I'm actually going to plump for some Commodore 64 music.

The arrangement in the Freescape engined "Driller" was absolutely fabulous. You can check it out here - fabulous stuff considering how restricted the game composers of old were.

If we are talking C64 I have fond memories of the last ninja 2, castle master, and turbodrift (maybe wasn't called that, but was a system 3 racer that moved the road instead of the car).

Even I liked the original F-Zero X music, and I bleedin' hate chiptune guitar. There is a way the instrument is meant to sound which you cannot get out of samples or synthesised noises, or at least 99.9% of developers couldn't back then. But that soundtrack still worked, nonetheless. Funny, that.

Castle Master was another of the freescape games \o/

I think I'll throw in Parallax too - amazing considering the limitations of the C64. SID truely was a step ahead of anything in that era of gaming.

Another one of my favourites, Matt Gray was a genius (Last Ninja 2, Quedex, Hunter's Moon, Dominator etc). Just a pity he's one of those who isn't so open to be interviewed about the past.

Turbocharge, written by Chris Butler and sound by Sean Connolly.

Yeah shame - Rob Hubbard did loads of interviews and lectures - for those interested you should really check out this series on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiPdjbsiQqM - it's interesting stuff.

Delta on the C64 had some great tunes, also, LastNinja2, TurboOutrun, LEDstorm (on Amiga as well) and Tertis on the C64..

I picked up Gradius Collection for the PSP this week (After playing lots of R-Types since it was released over PSN), and I'd forgotten how wonderful the music is. I particularly like the remixed tracks on the first game in the compilation (And I prefer that game at the moment as well) - going to get on the lookout for it for a ringtone I think.

                            Gem'X on the Amiga
Forgotten Worlds - I loved the shop music
                            Speedball 2
                            Apidya
                            Turrican
Cybernoid 2 on the speccy had a great tune in it, might not sound so good now tho >_<
Phantasy Star Online I loved the tune at the end when you'd killed Dark Falz

I know it's not strictly 'in-game' but The Getaway's main title theme is absolutely lush.

Some of the in-game tunes were also nicely tense. There's lots of hate levelled at this game, but it's one of my gaming 'guilty pleasures' and has a great atmosphere.

I thought i'd bring up this year old thread as recently i've been listening to a lot of game music and whilst doing so it got me thinking of some of the greatest soundtracks in games. Luckily there's a thread for it already, so I thought i'd list some more recent soundtracks (well, recent compared to the C64).

For me Braid has a wonderful atmospheric soundtrack that suits the game perfectly, there's some moody tracks as well as more upbeat ones that work well not just with the gameplay, but to listen to as well.

Half Life 2 has a very good soundtrack as well, not necessarily great to listen to as music, but it certainly compliments the game.

TESIV: Oblivion's soundtrack is very dramatic and LoTR esque, which is no bad thing what with the setting of the game. Good to listen to on the go as well.

For those that played Mirror's Edge, I must compliment one soundtrack 'Kate - Puzzle' which is perfect ambient noise whilst you scale the 4-5 level structure that hasn't been fully constructed yet. Charles and some others may recognise the track I mean.
