What has everyone been playing this week?

Just started Jak 3 probably my last last unplayed decent PS2 3D colourful platformer unless there is some hidden gem out there I've somehow missed.I enjoyed Jak 2 despite some of the snotty reviews and Jak 3 is proving good fun too.

Gameplay-wise - great variety and imagination. It is a quality production in every way with only the randomly mercurial camera control worth complaining about.

However, the main downer of the Jak series remains. Despite competent story telling, well written and well voiced dialogue in the cut-scenes the utterly cliched bratish Jak character has never been interesting or sympathetic. Daxter, his animal side kick, there for light relief, is rarely amusing, in fact more often he's very annoying. It is no coincidence that of the two similar franchises Ratchet & Clank has become the more loved and consequently the more successful.

I liked the pair of them in the first game but then ND tried to make it all dark and cool. It lost all of the appeal after that and just became Ratchett and Clank. Jak and Daxter was a pure platformer.

Playing PGR4 myself and boy it is not good. The whole thing feels so disjointed for a start with all of the event swapping over and over. Car handling is mediocre too, so little feedback from what is actually going on. Visually it is a mixed bag too, some nice lighting but the car models are very poor.
There are positives though. Racing in the varied weather is very fun, certainly in the wet with the puddles. I also really liked the snow. Cone events are still really good fun when you build up massive combos, very satisfying.

I can't help but feel that Bizarre Creations are a wonderfully overrated developer and never really got back to the sheer quality of PGR1. I played that to death and every version since has felt like a step back in terms of gameplay, bar the new weather anyway.

Played a little more of Conan (Xbox 360) this week but think I'm perhaps done with it. It's starting to annoy me now. After that I started Clash of the Titans (Xbox 360), and although it's not great and very repetitive, I'm a sucker for the myths that the game features. On the side I have started Tiger Woods 07 (Xbox 360). After playing Everybody's Golf I was hankering for a golf game on the Xbox 360, and Game obliged with this older Tiger game costing only 48p! 2004 was the last one I spent any kind of time on, and I feel right at home with this version.

On the PSP Tekken Dark Resurrection has been eating up all my time.

Been play Armoured Core for answer ( PS3 ), getting me in the mood for Friday AC5, also Binary Domain ( PS3 ) , online with the japanese and one maybe only other UK guy playing it, trying to rinse reckoning( PS3), and beat some fellow forumites at SSX ( PS3 ), oh and everything Vita, EG, RR, and a few minis.

Yakuza: Dead Souls mainly. I'd been powering through the story and moderately enjoying it, then I spent a session just doing side stuff and it's transformed into something beautious. So compelling and fun!

Also smidgens of Ninja Blade. Which has further enhanced my love of From Software. I was sold from the QTE in which you destroy a giant spider by striking a wrecking ball with your sword, jumping aboard as it swings overhead, then cutting it lose from its chain at the opportune angle for smashing into the spiders face. Amazing.

Finally, played tinier smidgens of Edgeworth Investigations on't DS too. S'good to be back with Phoenix Wright's cosey library of sound effects and characters.

Good gamin' times.

Finally onto the last world of Rayman Origins on Vita, a superb platforming game from Michael Ancel. They just don't make 'em like this is any more.

Also started replaying Shenmue on the Dreamcast, a game that speaks for itself.

And finally I'm still plugging away levelling up to lvl 50 on Wipeout 2048. Got to 46 now, but I'm thinking about completing the multiplayer campaign anyway as I'm most of the way through it now.

Mafia II. I got it in the OnLive sale for ?2.75. Where I usually detest this style of game, I'm finding this really fun. I like how it has chapters, so I can't spend hours walking around doing basically nothing like what I gather GTA to be like.

I've got Under Defeat HD and Battlefield 3 unplayed on PS3, as well as a wealth of other half-played titles.

Out of the ten Vita games I own, I have only finished Uncharted so far. I need to get back into the others. I've not been playing Unit 13 as much as I thought I would, and the MJ game should come tomorrow. Ow!
